DeAndre Hopkins Questions Chiefs Haters Following Super Bowl LIX Loss

Devavrat Kulkarni

Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins poses the questions during his post-game interview to all the Chiefs' haters!

Super Bowl LIX is in the books and the Philadelphia Eagles ran away as the eventual winners following a thumping 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the process of picking up their second Lombardi Trophy in the past 8 years, Philadelphia controlled the game from start to finish and was never in a state of bother as both the defense and offense played to perfection.

Winning against the two-time defending Champions was never going to be an easy task but the Eagles came to play and completely disrupted the Chiefs game plan. The defensive line decimated the Chiefs’ O-line, getting to Patrick Mahomes on 6 occasions while making life miserable for the three-time Champion. The Eagles’ secondary had two picks and kept Kansas City’s receivers in check for the most part.

On the other hand, Philly’s offense was in complete control despite not getting much from talented running back Saquon Barkley. Quarterback Jalen Hurts made the correct plays either through the air or on the ground as his O-line held up very well against the Chiefs’ defense.

It was evident from the get-go that Philadelphia was just better prepared and came out as the more aggressive team looking to take the game to their opponents. However, even through all this, the controversies surrounding the referees came out once again.

DeAndre Hopkins Comments Post Super Bowl Loss

As in any other game, there were questionable calls that either went or did not go in favor of both teams. Perhaps, though, for the first time this season, a few controversial calls did not go in the Chiefs’ favor, but that allowed the Chiefs’ wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to pose the following question during his post-game interview:

“You know I saw a lot of things in the media about the refs but obviously…what ya’ll gonna say now about the refs and us when there was a lot of touchy calls? Are ya’ll gonna report that? Are ya’ll gonna talk about the refs now?”

According to Hopkins, the Chiefs were on the receiving end of most of the controversial calls in the Super Bowl and wanted to know whether the media would lean into it now that the Chiefs were on the other side of the calls.

Kansas City’s Season-Long Referee Bias

It is no secret by now that most people outside of Kansas City and their fans across the world have been screaming ‘Referee Bias’ all season long. It is a popular belief amongst fanbases of the other 31 teams, the NFL media, and even several analysts that the Chiefs reached the Super Bowl only due to help in each and every game by the referees.

While Kansas City and its fanbase focused on their quest for the first-ever NFL three-peat in the Super Bowl era, everyone else focused on how the referees are ensuring the Chiefs make another Super Bowl.

It has been pointed out that many of the penalties Chiefs’ opponents received over the course of the season would not have been given had the opposition been any other team. Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes also received his fair share of hate as people felt he was getting unfair calls from referees leading to Kansas City’s success.

In fact, there was widespread talk amongst NFL fans to even boycott the Super Bowl as many believed it to be a foregone conclusion that Kansas City would be aided once again in the Super Bowl by the refs. And with popular singing sensation Taylor Swift bringing in tons of money for the NFL via Travis Kelce and the Chiefs, many felt that Super Bowl LIX would be rigged in their favor.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
