Daniil Medvedev fell short of title glory against Carlos Alcaraz last year.
The last year’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev will look to go one step ahead this year when he starts the 2025 campaign for Wimbledon championship. The Russian ace will take on Benjamin Bonzi of France in the opening round on Monday. It will be their first grass-court meeting.
Daniil Medvedev fell short of title glory against Carlos Alcaraz last year and the former No. 1 would eye a strong finish this year. Following a breakthrough year in 2024, this year has been a quite disappointing for the Russian ace. Medvedev reached the semifinals of the Indian Wells and and dropped out of top 10 for the first time since 2023. However, he returned back to top 10 ahead of the Wimbledon but task would be heavier this season. Recently, the world No. 9 reached the final of Terra Wortmann Open where he lost to Alexander Bublik in straight sets.

Benjamin Bonzi has a tough task in the opening round but the Frenchman had a similar story. Following the first ATP tour title last year and making into the top 100 for the first time, the French ace couldn’t replicate the glory this year. Bonzi recently played in the Mallorca Open and had a first-round exit against Brandon Holt in a three-set thriller. He reached the third round of the Australian Open which was her best run in a Grand Slam. The Frenchman went 14-16 this season, including 2-3 on grass.
Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi has won one match each in their two meetings overall. Daniil Medvedev’s only defeat came when he retired in the 2017 French Open.

Daniil Medvedev is a more dominant player on grass than Benjamin Bonzi. The Grand Slam experience will be vital for the Russian ace to crack the first-round. Medvedev can counter the Frenchman with his strong return of serve. He can hit full-swing groundstrokes rather than blocking the serve back into play. Medvedev should wrap up this game in straight sets.
Prediction: Medvedev to win in straight sets.
