Colin Cowherd Compares NFL’s Aaron Rodgers With NBA Superstar’s Eerily Similar Career Trajectory

Aaron Rodgers is the Kevin Durant of the NFL - per Analyst Colin Cowherd

Now that Aaron Rodgers is officially no longer on the New York Jets roster, he finds himself as a free agent for the first time in his career. Unfortunately, though, not many options are left for Rodgers at this point with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings looking like the only two real possibilities.

Although there are a few other teams who need quality quarterback play, not many of them will turn to the 4-time MVP, and the reason for the same has been highlighted by the host of ‘The Herd’, Colin Cowherd, who gave his two cents on the issues Rodgers is facing. Cowherd drew similarities between the NFL’s Aaron Rodgers and the NBA’s Kevin Durant by stating on his show:

“You know what Aaron Rodgers has become? What I compared him to the last four years, he’s become Kevin Durant. Think about it, both left incredibly stable organizations, Green Bay and Golden State. All they do is win. They got into their feelings a little bit of ego, they want to play with their buddies, so they go to unstable places, the Jets and Brooklyn, and it’s a mess very quickly. They Stoke Flames with the media…”

What Are the Parallels Between Rodgers and Durant That Cowherd Is Referring To?

Starting with Rodgers, the Super Bowl XLV winner left the Green Bay Packers in 2023 to join the New York Jets. The Packers are a storied organization and have seen success even after Rodgers left with youngster Jordan Love under center. However, after spending so many years at the top of the franchise, Rodgers wanted to still be that guy, which forced him out of Green Bay.

Similarly, Durant played the first twelve years of his NBA career with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors. During that span, he won 2 Championships and an MVP, but just like Rodgers, Durant’s ego got in the way and he moved to Brooklyn to play for the Nets as he too wanted to be the top dog.

Talking about success, Rodgers wanted to win another ring with the Jets, but injuries and his decisions hampered him from achieving it. The last time he made it to the playoffs was back in 2021, and in his last season with the Packers, he finished with a record of 8-9. Since then, he started just 18 games for the Jets over 2 years and finished with a terrible 6-12 record. All the same, Durant, who last won a Championship with Golden State in the 2017 season, has not been past the second round of the playoffs since then.

Cowherd continued to draw more parallels and had the following to say:

“For years they’re both single guys, rich, single guys, that get older nobody at home to hold them accountable, you know, you know how it is kind of doing their own thing…whatever they feel like, surround themselves with people who agree with them, and now both, the great Kevin Durant, and he’s great…and the formerly great Aaron Rodgers, he was great, have been reduced to crossing their fingers hoping they can latch on to a team that can make the playoffs.”

Whether or not this take makes sense is up for debate amongst fans of the sport. But, it is not too hard to see where Cowherd is coming off and while Durant still may have a few more good years to earn more rings, that window is closing very quickly for Rodgers who will be 42 midway through the 2025 season.
