Champions League: PSG Score Late Goal To Stun Barcelona, Man City Held by Monaco

Abhinav Goel

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning late show at the Estadi Olimpic as Goncalo Ramos’ injury-time strike earned the holders a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Champions League. In a clash billed as one of the highlights of the group stage, Marcus Rashford looked to have given Barca the edge when he set up Ferran Torres for the opener. But PSG roared back in incredible fashion.

Notably, PSG were missing several key stars including Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and captain Marquinhos. Man of the match Nuno Mendes teed up Senny Mayulu for the equalizer in the 90th minute. Later in the match, Ramos, fresh off the bench, converted Achraf Hakimi’s cross to seal a last-minute victory for PSG.

The victory takes PSG to six points from two matches, cementing their status as early favorites to retain the crown they lifted last season. Luis Enrique’s side were full of confidence in the closing stages. Substitute Lee Kang-in also rattled the post before Ramos’ dramatic finish. Speaking after the game, Ramos underlined PSG’s ambition this season.

Ramos said,

“I think we deserved the win. We played better than them. We played our game. We want to win everything again. We’re not happy with just what we did last season. We want more.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona were left to rue missed chances despite promising displays from Rashford and Lamine Yamal on the wings.

Manchester City Frustrated by Monaco

Over in Monaco, Manchester City were pegged back late as Eric Dier’s 90th-minute penalty rescued a 2-2 draw for the hosts at Stade Louis II. Erling Haaland continued his record-breaking Champions League run, scoring twice in the first half to bring his tally to 52 goals in just 50 appearances. His first was a delicate lob after latching onto Josko Gvardiol’s pass, while his second came from a towering header just before the break.

Monaco, though, refused to fold. Jordan Teze’s thunderbolt strike briefly leveled the contest before Dier’s cool spot-kick ensured a share of the spoils. Dier’s penalty came in the 90th minute after he was kicked in the head by City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. Man City remain unbeaten in six games, but the late goal conceded here highlighted defensive vulnerabilities that Pep Guardiola will need to address.
