A Tight Head-to-Head Sets Stage for Rome Showdown
Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini are set to clash for the eighth time in the third round of the Italian Open. The sixth-seeded Norwegian and 29th-seeded Italian both received first-round byes. In the second round, Berrettini battled past Jacob Fearnley in straight sets, needing a tiebreak to close out the second. Ruud, on the other hand, overcame a tough test from Alexander Bublik, eventually sealing the win in three sets.
Berrettini’s 2025 season has been a blend of promise and inconsistency. With a 12–9 record and no titles, he’s had flashes of form, quarterfinals in Qatar, Dubai, and Miami, highlighted by a straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic. He upset world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in Monte Carlo before falling to Lorenzo Musetti but withdrew early in Madrid with an abdominal injury.
Stat-wise, he’s fired 224 aces and won 77% on first serve while saving 69% of break points. However, a 38% conversion rate from 122 break chances and just 27% on first-serve returns reflect his struggles on the return game.

On the other hand, World No. 7 Ruud seems to be peaking. He clinched his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid, defeating Jack Draper in the final after beating Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, and Francisco Cerundolo. He also made the Barcelona quarterfinals and reached the Dallas final earlier in the season.
Ruud has tallied 130 aces and won 71% of first-serve points while converting 37% of 176 break points and saving 71% of the 162 he faced, evidence that his game is rounding into form after a slow start.
Casper Ruud leads the head-to-head against Matteo Berrettini 4-3 in a rivalry marked by momentum swings and closely contested matches. Only once has either player won back-to-back, and that edge currently belongs to Ruud.
Their showdown began at Roland Garros in 2019, where Ruud claimed a straight-sets victory. A year later, Berrettini responded in kind at the US Open, delivering a straight-set win of his own. Later that same season, Ruud regained the advantage in Rome with a gritty come-from-behind victory. But Berrettini struck back at the 2021 Madrid Masters, leveling their rivalry at two apiece after a dominant semifinal performance.

In 2022, Ruud found another gear. He defeated Berrettini in a tightly contested Gstaad final and followed it up with a commanding straight-sets win at the US Open quarterfinals, his only consecutive victories in this series, pushing the scoreline to 4-2.
Their most recent encounter came at the 2023 United Cup, where Berrettini snapped Ruud’s streak with a clean straight-set win, bringing the head-to-head to 4-3.
Now, with their eighth clash set for the Italian Open, anticipation is high. Can Berrettini level the rivalry once again, especially with the home crowd behind him? Or will Ruud reclaim control as he did two years ago?
