Carlos Prates vs. Ian Garry: Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo Weighs In

The UFC welterweight division is getting a big fight on April 26, 2025, at UFC Kansas City, as Carlos Prates and Ian Garry are set to face off in the main event at T-Mobile Arena. This fight stepped in after the original headliner, Jamahal Hill vs Khalil Rountree Jr., fell apart due to Hill’s injury but the details are still not know yet. Prates, can quite literally be named the Knockout machine as of this moment, because he’s taken down every single opponent he’s faced in the UFC so far. Prates has a MMA record of 21-6-0, and while he has knocked out every single opponent, we wonder if his unhealthy habit of smoking 8-10 cigarettes per day will ever affect his performance inside the octagon. However, so far the man has remained unstoppable.

Meanwhile Ian Garry is coming off of his first career loss against Shavkhat Rakhmonov who was supposed to face Belal Muhammad for the welterweight belt at UFC 315. The fight against Rakhmonov was extremely close and he nearly got that victory but he ended up losing the fight via unanimous decision. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that he has won 14 straight fights prior. Both the fighters are hungry and if Prates wins over Garry, he could move from 12th in the welterweight rankings to 7th.

Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman Gave Their Take on Who Would Win the Fight

In the Pound 4 Pound podcast with Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman, the two gave their take on who is the better fighter amongst the two and here is what they had to say;

Usman started off by saying “This is a banging fight. It’s a banging fighting because Carlos Prates has kinda proven himself as the guy that can headline. The guy that the company can get behind. To go out there and deliver a big show.”

Cejudo added “Carlos Prates does bring a different style. He is more dangerous with his hands, with his knees. He is a smaller version of what Alex Pereira is. Not so much of that crazy power but very diverse with his striking.” Cejudo then switched his attention to Ian Garry saying, “Ian Garry for as cringy as he could be bro, he’s dangerous man. He’s a lot more tactical than we give him credit for.”

Usman agreed with Cejudo’s statement about Ian Garry stating, “I agree with you about Ian. One thing that Ian has shown, he’s willing to do what it takes to win the fight even if it’s not pretty. For a guy like Carlos Prates, you don’t know unless you don’t know and my man right now is just riding high on it. Bro got that Cig on him, bumping that Ross on him… I’m riding with Carlos Prates.”

Usman stuck with Prates to win the fight, whereas Cejudo choose Ian Garry to win the fight because of his high technicality.

While Carlos Prates is definitely a formidable opponent for Ian Garry, we believe that Garry just has way more experience fighting some of the top fighters in the welterweight division and that could prove to be too much for Prates, provided that the Brazilian doesn’t knock Garry out with a devastating blow.
