Carlos Correa Injury Update: Twins Star Lands on IL After Scary Outfield Collision

Carlos Correa faces his first injury interruption of the season!

The Minnesota Twins’ 11-game winning streak (now 12) will continue without their star shortstop, at least for now. Carlos Correa was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list Friday after a violent collision with center fielder Byron Buxton during Thursday’s game in Baltimore.

The crash occurred in the third inning, when both players sprinted toward a shallow fly ball in center. Correa tracked the ball from shortstop onto the outfield grass, while Buxton charged in, reportedly calling for it only at the last moment before the two collided head-to-head. The crowd noise made it difficult for either to hear the other, according to bench coach Jayce Tingler, who’s currently filling in for manager Rocco Baldelli due to illness.

Correa exited the game immediately after the incident. Buxton remained in but was pulled an inning later. He entered the league’s concussion protocol and was held out of Friday’s lineup against the Brewers, where the Twins extended their winning streak to 12 games.

How Did Carlos Correa’s Injury Affect the Twins Setup?

In lieu of Carlos Correa’s injury injured, Brooks Lee shifted from second base to shortstop against the Orioles, and started at shortstop against the Brewers, while DaShawn Keirsey Jr. started in center field.

The team also made several roster moves ahead of Friday’s game: infielder Ryan Fitzgerald was called up from Triple-A St. Paul, while right-hander Michael Tonkin was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Fitzgerald, 30, had been one of St. Paul’s most consistent bats, slashing .328/.426 with 4 home runs and 21 RBIs over 35 games.

For Correa, this is his first real injury interruption of the season. The 30-year-old had appeared in all but three games, all scheduled rest days, after being limited to just 86 games in 2024 due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He’s hitting .236 with a .274 OBP, two homers, and 13 RBIs through 41 games this year. Buxton, too, had been a regular in the lineup, a notable development given his long injury history, playing in 41 of Minnesota’s first 44 games. Whether either player will miss extended time remains unclear.
