30th seed Nakashima looks to fend off a rising Dutch qualifier in the first round of the US Open.
The 2025 US Open first round presents a compelling clash between No. 30 seed Brandon Nakashima and Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong. Nakashima, still chasing his first title since the 2022 San Diego Open, has put together a steady yet unfulfilled campaign in 2025. The American reached semifinals in Acapulco and Houston, while also making quarterfinal runs in Delray Beach, Challenger Bordeaux, Stuttgart, Queen’s, and most recently Washington. Despite these deep runs, he has struggled to break through at times, most recently suffering a second-round exit in Cincinnati at the hands of Alexander Zverev. Statistically, Nakashima remains one of the steadier servers on tour, with 379 aces this season, winning 74% of first-serve points and converting 35% of 289 break opportunities.

De Jong, meanwhile, is enjoying a quiet breakthrough of his own. The 25-year-old Dutchman climbed to a career high of No. 79 last month before dipping slightly to No. 83. While still searching for his maiden ATP title, he has proven competitive this season, reaching the Nordea Open final before falling to Luciano Darderi. His Challenger form has been equally strong, with a final in Murcia, semifinals in Occitanie and Girona, and a string of quarterfinals, including most recently in Cancun. De Jong’s numbers suggest a well-rounded game with 182 aces, 75% first-serve points won, and a 36% break-point conversion rate across 160 opportunities.

Nakashima’s serve and composure on big stages should tilt this match in his favor, though De Jong’s form and confidence make him dangerous enough to push the American.

I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
