Fourth seed Jessica Pegula opens her US Open campaign against unseeded Egyptian Mayar Sherif in the first round. Pegula arrives in New York searching for form. Since her impressive win over Iga Swiatek in the Bad Homburg final, she has not gone past the second round of any event.

Earlier in the year she claimed titles in Austin and Charleston, defeating McCartney Kessler and Sofia Kenin in the finals, and also made deep runs in Adelaide and Miami. Her Grand Slam results, however, have been underwhelming, including a surprise early exit at Roland Garros to Lois Boisson. Across 53 matches this season, Pegula has fired 135 aces, won 67.6% of her first-serve points, 44.3% on return, and converted 44.1% of break points.

Sherif, meanwhile, has endured a modest season with more early exits than breakthroughs. She did manage to capture a title at the Challenger 250 in Parma, upsetting Victoria Mboko in straight sets. She also put together a quarterfinal run in Makarska and reached the semifinals in Nordea. In 13 main-draw matches this season, Sherif has fired 25 aces, winning 55.2% of her first serves and 36.5% of return points, and converting 32.9% of break points.

Mayar Sherif won the 8th WTA 125🏆 of her career in Parma.

She heads straight to the WTA 250 in Rabat, where she opens against Arantxa Rus.
