Belinda Bencic will now take on Iga Swiatek in the semifinals on Thursday.
Belinda Bencic booked her ticket to women’s singles semifinals after a straight set victory over Mirra Andreeva in the final quarterfinal game of the day. The Czech Republican ace held the nerves in tie-break to beat the 18-year-old Andreeva 7-6, 7-6 to reach her first ever semifinal in the Wimbledon.
This is the second career Grand Slam semifinal for Bencic and 38th victory against the top-10 player. She is the first Swiss woman semi-finalist at Wimbledon since Martina Hingis. Belinda failed to make it past the last 16 in her previous eight visits to southwest London but produced a deep run in the ongoing competition.
Brilliant Bencic does it again 🤩

Belinda Bencic defeats Mirra Andreeva 7-6(3), 7-6(2) to reach her first ever #Wimbledon semi-final – and she does it in some style! 💥 pic.twitter.com/KfjjZv0RrU
The Swiss baseliner recently suffered an arm injury, and Wimbledon remains just the second tournament back for Bencic. The 28-year-old gave birth to her child one year back in April. Bencic looked sharp in the match and took the opening set 7-6(3). Andreeva lost the momentum after dropping the set in tie-break.
Mirra Andreeva earned the first point of the set but she had no answer to Bencic’s clinical serves. The 18-year-old tried her best to keep Bencic at bay. The second set also went into tie-break and the scoreboard pressure denied a chance to Andreeva. The veteran ace thrived on taking the ball early and adopting an attacking approach.
Belinda Bencic will be back in the top 20 when the new rankings come out.

It has been an impressive story for Bencic. She was ranked No. 487 in the United Cup, and later, propelled her WTA rankings to No. 35. She has posted a 26-10 record this year, including 5-1 on grass. She overcame Parks, Jacquemot, Cocciaretto and Alexandrova to enter her maiden Wimbledon QF and then, defeated World No. 7 to advance to the semifinals.
“It’s crazy, it’s unbelievable. It’s a dream come true. I tried not to think about it at the match point. I’m just speechless,” Bencic said. “I studied all evening yesterday to come up with a plan. I think it worked out well. With two tie-breaks it is not easy, it’s just a small edge.”
Belinda Bencic will now take on Iga Swiatek in the semifinals on Thursday. The Polish ace defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-2, 7-5 to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final. This year, we will see a new winner in women’s singles event. Swiatek holds the 3-1 lead over Bencic in the WTA H2H meetings.
