Sabalenka opens her Berlin campaign against qualifier Masarova.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the second round of the Berlin Open. World No. 1 Sabalenka enters the tournament with a first-round bye, while Masarova arrives with momentum after a dominant win over 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.
The Swiss has yet to claim a WTA title but owns six titles on the ITF circuit. Still, with Sabalenka winning 40 of her 47 matches this season, the Belarusian remains the overwhelming favorite heading into this clash.

Sabalenka has been one of the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour this season, with title wins in Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. She’s also reached finals at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Stuttgart, and Roland Garros, where she fell in a tight three-set battle against Coco Gauff.
Add in a quarterfinal appearance in Rome, and her resume speaks for itself. Statistically, the world No. 1 is backing it up: she’s fired 156 aces, won 67.4% of first-serve points, 48% on return, and converted 49.4% of her break chances across 47 matches.
Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will face each other in the final of Roland Garros.

Their head to head is tied at 5-5.
Aryna won their most recent meeting in Madrid this year, but Coco won the one time they met in a Grand Slam final.

Masarova has shown glimpses of form this season, most notably with a finals run at the WTA 125 in Lleida and semifinals in Puerto Vallarta and Birmingham. However, consistency has been tricky, with most of her WTA-level events ending in qualifying rounds or early exits.
In her six main-draw matches, she’s posted impressive service stats with 40 aces, 73.8% first-serve points won, and 55.6% break points converted. Still, those figures may flatter to deceive, coming mostly from a limited number of events, and do not fully reflect her overall performance.

Sabalenka’s elite form, big-match experience, and all-surface consistency make her a heavy favorite against Masarova. While the Swiss has shown flashes, the world No. 1 should power through in straight sets.

Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets
At 1/7, Sabalenka is the overwhelming favorite, and rightfully so given her dominant season. Masarova’s 9/2 odds reflect her long-shot status, with minimal main-draw wins to her name. Unless Sabalenka falters badly, the upset seems highly unlikely.
