Anisimova aims to outlast rising Brit in grass-court battle.
In today’s round of 16, eighth seed Amanda Anisimova is set to face wildcard Sonay Kartal for the very first time in their careers. The Queen’s Club Championship is off to a promising start in its return after a 52-year hiatus. Kartal, who turned pro in 2019, pulled off a gritty three-set upset over Daria Kasatkina in the previous round. Meanwhile, Anisimova staged a comeback win against wildcard Jodie Burrage to book her place in the next round.
As the tour shifts from clay to grass, the adjustment isn’t easy and that’s exactly what makes this warm-up event ahead of Wimbledon so crucial. Now, with home support behind her, Kartal faces a real test. Can she topple the more experienced Anisimova, who turned pro back in 2016, or will the American’s grass-court rhythm prevail?
Anisimova’s 2025 season has been inconsistent, mostly due to illness and recurring injuries. After reaching the Hobart quarterfinals and pulling out, she suffered an early exit in Melbourne and withdrew from Singapore. Her highlight came in Doha, where she claimed the title over Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets.
Since then, she has made deep runs in Charleston and WTA 125K Paris, both cut short due to back and hip issues. Statistically, she’s delivered 67 aces, won 63.1% of first serves, and converted 44.2% of break points.

Kartal, now ranked a career-high No. 50, is steadily building momentum. She made the third round in Indian Wells, her first breakthrough at a WTA 1000, and reached the last 16 in Paris before injury forced her out.
Though most of her results ended in the round of 32, her French Open second-round showing was a personal French Open best. She’s won 58.8% of first serves, hit 15 aces, and holds a solid 49.4% break point conversion rate.
Amanda Anisimova and Sonay Kartal do not have a head-to-head yet.

Anisimova may not have had the smoothest season, but when she’s fit, her firepower and experience shine through. Considering Kartal’s steady rise and the confidence of playing on home turf, this will be a new level of challenge for the Brit. Expect a tight battle, but the American’s big-match maturity gives her a slight edge.

Prediction: Amanda Anisimova in straight sets
Anisimova enters as a narrow favorite, owing to her superior experience and strong service metrics. Kartal, ranked No. 50, has momentum but less exposure at this level. Given her 49.4% break point conversion and solid form, she’ll be competitive. Still, factoring in Anisimova’s Doha title and overall baseline strength, the edge leans in favor of her.
Here are the betting odds according to BetMGM:
Amanda Anisimova: 1/2
Sonay Kartal: 8/5
