No. 2 vs No. 8 seed at the Eternal City
No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, who is a two-time winner of the Italian Open, faces home favourite Lorenzo Musetti in the 2025 Internazionali BNL d’Italia quarterfinals. Both players won their Round of 16 encounters in straight sets, resulting in a mouth-watering night match on Wednesday’s Centre Court action.
Zverev is entering a crucial part of his 2025 season. The German starlet won the Italian Open 2024 trophy, meaning that he is defending 1000 points at the event this year. He is also the runner-up at Roland Garros from last year – having lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. ‘Sascha’ Zverev has one title to his name in 2025 – the BMW Open in Munich. He defeated Ugo, Gaubas and Fils to reach the quarterfinals. With a 13-4 clay court record and nearly 78% service game winning ratio on this surface, the 28-year-old can beat anyone on his day.
In comparison, Musetti has a similar 13-3 record on the red dirt in 2025. The Italian reached the final in Monte Carlo, before making the semifinals at the Mutua Madrid Open. With 37% breaks achieved (44 out of 119), Musetti ranks just outside the world’s Top-10 in terms of break point conversion rate on clay. The World No. 9 is searching for his third career championship, and first of the year. He beat Virtanen, Nakashima and Medvedev to book his spot in the last eight.
The head to head between Zverev and Musetti is 2-1 in favour of the 23-year-old Italian star. While Zverev won the first encounter between them, Musetti has made a telling comeback in this rivalry.
After Wednesday’s quarterfinal at the Italian capital, three out of four clashes between these players will have been on outdoor clay courts. While they are yet to lock horns at Grand Slam level, Musetti denied reigning gold medalist Zverev another success at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Despite what the odds might suggest, Zverev knows the conditions in Rome better than most players left in the draw. The German enjoys the slower nature of courts, and has been serving well too. Musetti will need to apply pressure on the second serve of the three-time Grand Slam finalist – expect the Italian to target the corners and use the crowd to his advantage.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev in three sets.
As per the pre-match money line probability, Lorenzo Musetti has a 59% chance of entering the final four. The match is predicted to go into a third set, with the home favourite possibly emerging victorious.
Alexander Zverev Win: -145
Lorenzo Musetti Win: +118
