Zverev won the Rome Masters in 2017 and 2024.
Defending champion Alexander Zverev steps onto Centre Court for a blockbuster quarterfinal encounter against Lorenzo Musetti at the 2025 Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Wednesday’s high stakes clash will determine who enters the semifinals – to face either Carlos Alcaraz or Jack Draper. Zverev will require an Alcaraz QF loss and a successful title defence in order to enter Roland Garros as the No. 2 seed.
Zverev and Musetti are set to face each other for the fourth time on Wednesday. It will be their third meeting on outdoor clay courts – while ‘Sascha’ won the first of these encounters at Madrid in 2022, the Italian exacted revenge at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Facing Zverev later on in the same year at Vienna, Musetti pulled off a comeback victory to advance to the semifinals.

Currently the No. 2 ranked player in the world, Alexander Zverev won his first title of the year at the BMW Open in Munich last month. He started the season by reaching the final of the Australian Open, but went through a mini slump right after. The 28-year-old German has a 13-4 record on the red dirt so far, and is looking to retain his championship at the Italian capital.
For Lorenzo Musetti, the Italian Open is a crucial pit-stop on tour – it is a home tournament as well as the perfect preparation for Roland Garros. The 23-year-old retired in Round-2 last year, meaning that a good outing in Rome could ensure a surge in points and ranking for him. Musetti currently has a 13-3 run on clay in 2025. He has beaten Virtanen, Nakashima and Medvedev en route to the last eight.
Zverev vs Musetti will be the final men’s singles match on Wednesday. The encounter will follow the Round of 16 between Casper Ruud and Jaume Munar, as well as a quarterfinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper.
