Achraf Hakimi Injury Update: How Long Will PSG Be Without Their Star Defender?

Moumita Dutta

Paris Saint-Germain have been dealt a significant blow after Achraf Hakimi sustained a serious ankle injury during their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. The Moroccan full-back, celebrating his 27th birthday, was forced off the pitch in tears.

Bayern’s Luis Diaz committed a reckless challenge near the end of the first half. The referee showed a red card to the Colombian forward to send him off after a VAR review. Díaz lunged from behind, catching Hakimi’s left leg in a scissor motion.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch, and administered several minutes of treatment. The defender was then helped off visibly emotional. Initial tests have ruled out a fracture. But further scans have revealed a severe sprain and contusion with ligament damage, though fortunately without rupture.

According to PSG’s official statement, Hakimi will miss several weeks of action. Club sources suggest that Hakimi will need a window of six to eight weeks to recover. That is, depending on his rehabilitation progress. This rules him out of multiple key fixtures in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

AFCON Doubt and Squad Concerns

There is some cautious optimism that Hakimi could return before the Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco’s AFCON campaign begins on December 22. So, Hakimi will be in a race against time to regain full fitness. Given the estimated timeline, his availability for the group stage looks uncertain.

For the Atlas Lions, his absence would be a considerable setback. Hakimi’s pace and versatility have been central to their recent success. Meanwhile, PSG find themselves increasingly stretched by injuries. Ousmane Dembele is recovering from a calf strain.

Left-back Nuno Mendes is sidelined with a knee issue. Head coach Luis Enrique acknowledged this challenging situation after the Bayern defeat, saying, “It’s football. It’s a contact sport, and these things happen. We’ll wait for the doctors’ evaluation before knowing more.”

Testing Period Ahead for Achraf Hakimi and PSG

The French champions remain top of Ligue 1. However, they are facing a demanding schedule without their first-choice right-back. As the medical team begin Hakimi’s recovery program, the coach will hope for positive updates in the coming weeks. PSG’s Champions League ambitions and Morocco’s continental hopes hang in the balance.
