Liverpool showcased resilience and hunger as they handed Real Madrid their first Champions League defeat of the season. It was a brilliant 1-0 win for the Reds under the Anfield lights. It was also a statement win for Arne Slot’s side, who looked revitalized after a turbulent domestic run.

Yet, it was the Premier League side who dictated tempo and intensity from the start. Thibaut Courtois kept the visitors afloat early. He produced a string of excellent saves to deny Dominik Szoboszlai and Hugo Ekitike. But Liverpool’s persistence finally cracked Madrid’s composure after the hour mark.

The breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Alexis Mac Allister rose highest to meet Szoboszlai’s precise free-kick, glancing a powerful header. Even though Courtois got his hands on the ball, he couldn’t stop it from hitting the back of the net. The Argentine is not typically known for aerial prowess.

He still became Liverpool’s unlikely hero on a night that demanded precision and heart. After the match, coach Arne Slot said, “He’s been improving every week, and that header was pure determination.” The hosts could have extended their lead with sharper finishing, way before the header came.

However, it was only Courtois’ brilliance that kept the Reds at bay for so long and saw Madrid lose by only a single goal. Despite controlling possession at times, Alonso’s side lacked penetration. It became a recurring issue that left Mbappe and Bellingham frustrated. The pair were neutralized effectively by a disciplined Liverpool backline marshalled by Virgil van Dijk.

Anfield Intensity Wins in Liverpool vs Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to Anfield, met with boos from the home crowd. It added drama but little impact. Madrid’s late push never materialized.
