The Chicago Sky have been knocked out of the 2025 playoffs contention.
Chicago Sky’s head coach Tyler Marsh called out the WNBA over the schedule of a season, while raising concerns about players’ health. Notably, the Sky suffered a 94-79 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Monday night. While the game saw the absence of five-time All-Star guard Courtney Vandersloot due to a season-ending injury, Chicago had a clean injury report apart from that. Following the loss, Marsh was asked about the WNBA schedule and whether there is a need for roster expansion.
The rookie coach didn’t mince his words and called out scheduling in the WNBA. He said, “I think the schedule could be more conducive to the health of the players for one, but also, with the expansion, I think that yes, from an injury standpoint, but also from a player development standpoint. There’s already limited time to develop young players, and the expectation put on them is so great in such a short period of time that it’s really unfair to the player.”
Marsh, who spent three years with the Las Vegas Aces as an assistant coach also addressed the need to expand rosters in the league. He said that the expanded roster would make it easier for the teams to have more flexibility.
Marsh said, “I think that with the expanded rosters, especially now with team expansion coming, there’s more of a need and necessity for intricate player development plans and systems and resources because more of these young players that are going to get opportunities have to have some sort of room and grace and time to develop into professional basketball players.”
He added, “I think that roster expansion could and should help that, and just give teams more flexibility to be able to develop. And now you can kind of manage the flow of the season a little bit more to where you don’t have to search for someone that’s just at home waiting for an opportunity.”
Notably, the Sky have already been knocked out of the playoffs contention for this season. During their campaign, they made a few mid-season signings to deal with the injuries, and brought in players such as Marquesha Davis and Sevgi Uzun.
