Carlos Alcaraz sets his sights on rival Jannik Sinner at the 2025 US Open; Holger Rune adds perspective.
World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has his sights firmly set on Jannik Sinner as the 2025 US Open begins in New York. With the Spaniard aiming to reclaim the No. 1 ranking and the Italian chasing a fourth straight hard-court major, the year’s final Slam carries the promise of another blockbuster chapter in tennis’ most compelling rivalry. The two are favored to collide in the Flushing Meadows final, which would mark their fifth meeting of the season.

Carlos Alcaraz is effusive about his rival’s achievements while making clear his intent in a press conference before the US Open. He said, “The last three Grand Slams on hard courts, he’s won, right? It’s unbelievable the tennis he brings on hard courts. So I just look up to him in some way, just to be ready if I have to face him somewhere. It’s going to be great. I’m just getting ready for the tournament, just to get good results. Hopefully, I will meet him in the final.”
The Spaniard added that facing Sinner always pushes both men to new heights: “Everybody watches what we can do every time we face each other on court. We raise the level to the top. But yeah, it would be a great result having a good run here. If I beat him, then even more so… he has a big target on his back.” With both players in prime form, fans and analysts alike are circling September 7 as a potential date for a winner-take-all showdown.

Sinner, 24, arrives in New York with history on the line. The World No. 1 has already captured the Australian Open twice in the past two years and defended his US Open crown last season, extending his hard-court Grand Slam winning streak to 21 matches. He was forced to withdraw from last week’s Cincinnati final against Alcaraz due to illness, ending a 26-match hard-court winning run on the ATP Tour, but his dominance remains unquestioned.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, is motivated by more than just silverware. His maiden ascent to No. 1 came three years ago in Flushing Meadows, and the 22-year-old can repeat the feat by equaling or bettering Sinner’s performance this fortnight. The stakes are simple, if Sinner falls short, Alcaraz has the chance to dethrone him and reclaim the top spot.

While the spotlight shines on Alcaraz and Sinner, Holger Rune remains a key name in the draw. The Dane, who stunned Novak Djokovic to win the 2022 Paris Masters at just 19, has since struggled to maintain the same upward trajectory. Now 22, Rune continues to measure himself against the game’s elite, and his candid take on the Alcaraz–Sinner rivalry sheds light on what makes it so gripping.
“I always found it more comfortable playing Jannik because he’s giving more rhythm, playing more the same shots,” Rune told The Guardian. “With Carlos there’s so much variety. You give him one opportunity and he’s going to either drop shot you or punch you down the line or something different. It’s unpredictable, which makes it more difficult. But Jannik’s lower level is higher because Carlos sometimes can mis-hit some balls. But then I think Carlos’s top game is a little bit higher than Jannik’s so they’re really equal.”

Rune’s comments underline the razor-thin margins at the top of men’s tennis. As Sinner aims for a fifth Slam and Alcaraz seeks to reclaim the throne, Rune and the chasing pack will look to change the narrative.
