Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel Jumps In Training Camp Scrum Comes Out With Bloodied Cheek

Toughness is the name of the game if you are a football player; after all, it is one of the more physical sports in the world. But what happened last night during the Patriots’ practice session against the Washington Commanders was anything but a sport.

Training Camp Scuffle That Led to Vrabel’s Intervention

During a pass play, New England’s rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson went for a block as the Commanders were blitzing, after which many players suddenly piled on top of each other.

Seeing what was happening in the middle of the field, Vrabel dived in to break up the scrum, and when things finally settled down, the Patriots’ head coach could be seen coming out with a bloodied cheek.

Earlier in his playing career, Vrabel was part of the Patriots’ dynasty, in which he won 3 Super Bowls as one of the league’s toughest linebackers of that time. Perhaps he was reminiscing about the good old days and couldn’t help but jump in, or perhaps it was his way of showing the team that there is no backing down when you put on that jersey.

Whatever the case, the 49-year-old’s actions sent a loud and clear message that this team is ready for all challenges, and they are built on toughness. Many of New England’s players shared their reactions after the practice on what happened and how their coach always has their backs.

DeMario Douglas on Mike Vrabel diving into a fight and getting cut:

“That shows a lot man about our coach. He’ll do anything for us. That’s love right there.”

“I said ‘Coach what’s wrong with you?’ he said “‘You should’ve seen the other guy.””

Patriots Players React to the Incident

At the end of the practice session, the media asked the players about their thoughts on seeing their coach stand up like that.

Quarterback Drake Maye was all for it from a mentality standpoint, saying that it shows the intensity that is needed, and it all starts from the head coach. Maye even joked about thinking of getting involved himself.

“That’s what we’re trying to build, I think. And it starts with the head coach, the intensity, bringing it every day. You know, taking no crap, we’re right there on the field. But also, it comes at a time where with our guys offensively and getting over there and getting some tussles and kind of having some penalties and extra after the whistle can get us in trouble, but for mentality, I like it. I think that’s what you want. I mean, I almost got in there, but I think maybe another day, maybe. So, we’ll see.”

Other players, such as tight end Hunter Henry, were happy to note that Vrabel has their backs and will always be there with the players, while wide receiver DeMario Douglas also echoed similar sentiments.

Offensive tackle Morgan Moses referred to Vrabel as a players’ coach and also referenced his toughness as a former linebacker in this league.

“He loves what he does. Any time you got a coach you see out there wearing pads and getting punched by guys and doing drills, it makes you want to go harder. He understands the process as a player and a coach.”

It’s been a tough few years for the Patriots ever since Tom Brady left the organization. But now with the reins of the team handed over to Vrabel, there is certainly some optimism that the good days may just be around the corner.
