Svitolina rallies past Paolini in a dramatic three-setter to reach her fifth Roland Garros quarterfinal.
In a gripping fourth-round encounter at the 2025 French Open, 13th seed Elina Svitolina knocked out fourth seed Jasmine Paolini in three sets, 4–6, 7–6(5), 6–1. Paolini looked in command early on, taking the first set, but Svitolina turned the tide with a gritty comeback and a dominant finish.
For a set and a half, it looked like Paolini had the match in her grip. The Italian controlled the rallies, took the opener 6-4, and raced ahead 3-1 in the second. But Svitolina had other plans. She clawed her way back, erasing two breaks and saving two match points to level things at 5–5. The tension peaked in the tiebreak, where Svitolina held her nerve to force a decider.
From there, the floodgates opened. With Paolini clearly rattled, Svitolina surged and won the set with momentum. The final set was near-total domination, ending 6-1, and to be honest, it wouldn’t have been shocking had it ended in a bagel.

After the match, Svitolina said, “I still cannot believe that this match finished my way. It was a really difficult match today; Jasmine was playing really well. It was really tough for me but I’m very happy I was able to stay composed and fight until the very last point.”

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
