How Did Ayrton Senna Die?

Rohan Singh

Decoding the death of the Formula 1 legend, Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna was a gem in the sport of Formula 1. He was the shining driver who took the entire grid by storm when he made his debut. Three world championships are too less to define his presence and his impact on the sport of Formula 1. A driver who was soft to friends yet ruthless on track. A driver who cared deeply but had a frightening will to win the race.

Ayrton Senna is known for his rivalry with Alain Prost. The duo shared a very tense bond while they competed together. Yet, all of a sudden everything came to an abrupt end in 1994.

It was May 1, 1994 and Formula 1 was racing at Imola for the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The paddock was silent because of the horrifying death of Roland Ratzenberger on Saturday. Ayrton Senna was the driver who decided to pay homage to the young rookie’s soul. He carried with himself an Austrian flag, which he wanted to unfurl in honor of Ratzenberger.

But, the race ended up taking Ayrton Senna away from Formula 1 forever. The most sensational and controversial talent of Formula 1 was gone, without a hint of what was about to come. Some say that, Senna’s behaviour that weekend was a bad omen and he knew what was about to come his way. Sid Watkins even tried convincing him to not race. But Senna decided to continue even though he was unwilling to do so.

What Caused Ayrton Senna’s Fatal Crash?

Ayrton Senna was racing in a new team in 1994. He was a celebrity for McLaren but at Williams he was just another driver who was expected to win and prove his worth. His car failed to score points in the first two races. Their chief aero-designer Adrian Newey attributed his problems to Williams’s instability. After two years of using active suspension, the aerodynamics of the car were simply not enough.

Senna was not confident in his car at all but he was giving his best. After a horrific race start, Senna raced to protect his pole position from Michael Schumacher and to win the race. But, the suspension of his Williams failed him. His car did not steer as intended and drove straight into the Tamburello corner. The car hit Tamburello’s concrete at 211 kmh causing a massive crash.

Senna’s death was a result of the injuries he sustained from the crash. His front wheel shot up and impacted his helmet. The G forces had already shoved his head into the headrest violently. Additionally, a piece of front suspension also pierced his helmet causing injuries above his eye. Track marshals and medical professionals believe that head trauma was the cause of his death.

What Were Senna’s Last Words?

Ayrton Senna shot a televised lap for his old rival, Alain Prost who retired in 1994. In his radio message, Senna was heard saying-

“I would like to say welcome to my old friend, Alain Prost. Tell him we miss him very much.”

The pair barely spoke to each other due to the rivalry but Senna’s peace offering was enough for Prost. They had a long conversation in the paddock the following day. Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna were to meet before the Monaco Grand Prix.

Why Did Ayrton Senna’s Head Move?

It was a false alarm. It is possible that after the crash Senna was consciousness for a split second before he died due to the impact. His head lifted to the left before leaning motionless towards the right.
