Sevilla Sack Manager Amid Relegation Fears and Growing Instability, Who Is Replacing Pimienta?

Sevilla have parted ways with their head coach Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta. This came following a dismal stretch of results in 2025. And it marked the sixth managerial change at the club in the span of three years. Their recent 1-0 defeat to Valencia on Friday sealed his fate.

This was their fourth consecutive league defeat which left Sevilla languishing in 13th place in La Liga. With just three wins since the turn of the year, only seven points are separating them from the relegation zone. In this situation, the club board decided that immediate action was necessary.

Pimienta was appointed last summer on a two-year contract. In a statement, Sevilla expressed gratitude for Pimienta’s efforts, saying: “Sevilla would like to thank Garcia Pimienta for his work over these months, and his professionalism, wishing him best luck in future endeavours.”

Pimienta had previously impressed by guiding Las Palmas to La Liga and ensured their survival. However, he struggled to replicate that success in Andalusia. A seven-game stretch that included a loss in the heated El Gran Derbi against Real Betis only added to the mounting pressure.

Joaquin Caparros to Return for Third Spell

Sevilla have moved swiftly to appoint a familiar face. The club recently announced the return of Joaquin Caparros to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan for a third stint as manager. The 69-year-old led the club from 2000 to 2005 and also had interim roles in 2018 and 2019. He is widely seen as a stabilizing figure during turbulent periods.

Hence, he will be tasked with ensuring Sevilla avoid relegation. While they are currently seven points above the drop zone, they still have upcoming fixtures against fellow strugglers Alaves, Las Palmas, and Leganes. These fixtures could prove decisive in their fight for survival.

Club in Crisis Mode

Not long ago that Sevilla was revered for its consistency and European pedigree. They are even the most successful club in the Europa League with seven titles. However, their recent years have been plagued by managerial churn and financial strain.

Since 2021, Julen Lopetegui, Jorge Sampaoli, Jose Mendilibar, Diego Alonso, and Quique Sanchez Floresq have all come and gone swiftly. With Caparros back at the helm, Sevilla will hope to get back on track, especially with at least one tough match out of their seven left against Real Madrid.
