With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Detroit Red Wings have made a crucial roster move, recalling veteran forward Austin Watson under emergency conditions. As they gear up for a series of must-win games, Watson’s return brings a mix of physicality, experience, and timely scoring to the team.

Watson, who has spent the majority of this season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, was briefly with the Red Wings earlier in April. However, he was sent down over the weekend for two games, where he made an immediate impact. The 32-year-old forward notched three goals and five points in that short span, proving his ability to contribute offensively when needed.

His performance over the weekend added to what has already been a strong AHL campaign. In 58 games with Grand Rapids, Watson has tallied 19 goals and 42 points, making him one of the team’s most productive forwards. He currently ranks second in total points and third in goals for the Griffins. But beyond his scoring touch, Watson has also made his presence felt in other ways, leading the team with 96 penalty minutes, a staggering 45 more than the next closest player.

That gritty, high-energy style of play has translated in limited NHL action as well. In his eight games with the Red Wings this season, Watson has picked up two points and racked up 17 penalty minutes. He made the most of his last NHL recall, scoring in back-to-back games on March 24 and 25, reminding Detroit of the kind of spark he can provide.

Watson is no stranger to the NHL, having played full-time in the league for the past five seasons. He has built a reputation as a tough, hard-hitting enforcer, willing to drop the gloves and play a physical game. His current stint in the minors marks his first AHL action since the 2018-19 season.
