Montreal Canadiens Secure Future, Sign Tyler Thorpe to Three-Year Deal

Montreal Canadiens ink promising forward Tyler Thorpe to a three-year contract, strengthening their depth for the seasons ahead.

The Montreal Canadiens have taken a significant step in securing their future by signing Tyler Thorpe, their 2024 fifth-round draft pick, to a three-year entry-level contract. Alongside this deal, Thorpe has also signed an AHL professional tryout (PTO) agreement with the Laval Rocket, allowing him to finish the 2024-25 season in the minors. With five regular-season games left and a strong playoff push expected, he’ll get a chance to test his skills at the next level before transitioning fully to professional hockey.

Thorpe has spent the last three years developing his game with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, making remarkable progress along the way. Initially seen as a bottom-six power forward, he steadily worked his way up the lineup and became a key offensive contributor. His 27-goal, 52-point performance this season placed him third in goals and fifth in scoring among Giants forwards. Although his points-per-game pace dipped slightly from the previous season (44 points in 51 games), his consistent production and physical presence made him an intriguing mid-round selection for Montreal.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, Thorpe brings size and strength that are hard to ignore. He has a knack for positioning himself in front of the net, using his frame to shield defenders while capitalizing on scoring chances. His heavy shot is another weapon in his arsenal, making him a dual threat as both a net-front presence and a shooter. Additionally, he isn’t afraid to throw his weight around, making life difficult for opponents along the boards. Over the years, his skating and mobility have improved, allowing him to become more effective in all three zones.

As he transitions to the professional ranks, Thorpe’s playing style gives him a strong foundation to build upon. His ability to control the front of the net and contribute physically will serve him well in the AHL, where he’ll continue refining his offensive game. If he continues his upward trajectory, he could become a valuable piece for Montreal in the years ahead.

With this signing, Thorpe joins Utah’s Owen Allard and Edmonton’s Connor Clattenburg as the third fifth-round pick from the 2024 NHL Draft to secure an entry-level deal. Now, all eyes are on him as he takes his first steps into professional hockey, looking to prove he belongs.
