Seattle Kraken Officially Eliminated from Western Conference Playoff Race

Anamika Shrivastava

The Kraken’s postseason hopes are over as they fall short of a Stanley Cup Playoff spot for the second straight season.

The Seattle Kraken’s hopes of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs have officially come to an end. With the St. Louis Blues extending their winning streak to nine games, the Kraken are now mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. This marks the second straight season that Seattle will be watching the playoffs from the sidelines, a tough pill to swallow for a franchise still trying to cement its place in the NHL.

Seattle’s first season under head coach Dan Bylsma hasn’t gone as planned. The team currently holds a 31-26-6 record, which isn’t enough to keep them in the playoff race. Bylsma, who worked with many of Seattle’s young prospects during his time with their AHL affiliate, was expected to bring fresh energy and structure to the team. While the results haven’t come immediately, the organization remains hopeful that his familiarity with their developing talent will pay off shortly.

One consistent bright spot for Seattle has been forward Jared McCann. For the fourth consecutive season, he leads the team in scoring, tallying 18 goals and 33 assists for 51 points. While the team has struggled, McCann’s reliability as an offensive leader continues to shine. However, the Kraken will need more firepower around them if they want to make a serious push for the playoffs next season.

Between the pipes, Joey Daccord has put together a respectable campaign as the team’s primary goaltender. In 50 games played, he has a 24-19-5 record with a .909 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average. While those numbers aren’t elite, Daccord has been a steady presence in net and has kept the Kraken in games they might have otherwise lost.

With their elimination, Seattle joins the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Nashville Predators as teams already out of the playoff picture. Interestingly, no Eastern Conference teams have been mathematically eliminated yet, making the battle for those spots even tighter.

Despite a disappointing season, the Kraken are far from giving up. The franchise is still young, and their fan base remains passionate. However, there’s growing pressure to start delivering results, especially in a major sports market like Seattle. The team can’t afford to spend too many seasons struggling, or they risk losing momentum. As they shift their focus to next season, the Kraken will need to make key improvements to ensure they remain competitive and, most importantly, relevant in the NHL landscape.
