The 2025 March Madness is surprising us with some crazy results and the competition witnessed a four-game slate on Thursday. Eight teams including Duke participated in the first day of Sweet 16 and four teams booked their place in the Elite 8.
From Duke’s emphatic win over Arizona to Texax’s second-largest comeback ever in Sweet 16 history, let’s go through the key highlights from the NCAA action last night.

Number-2 seed Alabama routed the No. 6 BYU Cougars 113-88 and set a new record for most points in an NCAA tournament game. The Tide set a new record for most 3-pointers by a team in a tournament game (25) and most 3-pointers attempted (51). Mark Sears scored a game-high 34 points while shooting 10-for-16 from 3-point range. He also became the first player in NCAA tournament history to have eight 3s and eight assists in a game. The Crimson Tide will look to get to their second straight Final Four.

No. 1 seed Florida squeezed past the No. 4 Maryland 87-71 to set a date with Texax Tech in Elite Eight. Will Richard scored the Gators with 15 points, and five players recorded in double figures. The Gators turned the ball over 17 times and outscored Maryland 38-30 in the paint. Their bench contributed 29 points and it shows the depth of the No.1 side in the NCAA tournament. Maryland’s Derik Queen led all the scorers with 27 points but couldn’t prevail the elimination. Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 17 points while Julian Reese had 12, including 8 rebounds.

Cooper Flagg, the projected first pick in the NBA draft, scored 30 points, and No. 1 Duke overcame Arizona 100-93 on Thursday night. Flagg also added seven assists, six rebounds and three blocks, including the buzzer-beating 3 at halftime. Caleb Love led all the scorers with 35 points. The Blue Devils held a six-point lead at halftime and the Wildcats didn’t respond much in the second half. Duke will take on No. 2 Alabama in the Elite Eight on Saturday night.

Texas Tech erased a 16-point deficit to beat Arkansas 85-83 in overtime. Tech were down 13 points with about 4 minutes left and they hit a game-tying three with 9 seconds to force overtime. Red Raiders had a 10-0 run to make it a three-point game with 2:06 remaining. Darrion Williams made a game-winning bucket with seven seconds left in overtime. Their starters JT Toppin, Christian Anderson and Williams scored at least 20 points. It was the second-largest comeback ever in Sweet 16 history and a first-ever Elite 8 entry to Texax since 2019.
