March Madness Sweet 16 Results (Mar. 28): Zeigler Outshines Kentucky, Milos Uzan’s Game-Winner and More

Here, we go through the key highlights of the March Madness games that took place on Friday.

The 2025 March Madness had a four-game slate on Friday. It was day 2 of the Sweet 16 and we got the top eight teams, who will battle for the final four. With some crazy finishes and individual performances, it was another interesting day in NCAA basketball.

From Auburn’s comeback victory from a nine-point deficit to Zeigler leading Tennessee in emphatic win over Kentucky, let’s go through the key highlights from the NCAA action last night.

MI State 73-70 Ole Miss

Michigan State Spartans edged out Ole Miss Rebels 73-70 to clinch the Elite 8 bracket. Rebels held a three-point advantage at halftime but MI State made a comeback in the second half and outscored Ole Miss 42-37. Jase Richardson led the Spartans with 20 points and six rebounds. Coen Carr added 15 points and Jaden Akins chipped in 13.

Both teams were tied at 63 points with 2:28 left in the game. Jaden Akins’ jumper helped Michigan State regain the lead and later, they stretched it to six points before Murrell’s 3-pointer at the buzzer. Sean Pedulla scored 24 points for the Rebels, who stunned No. 3 seeded Lowa State.

Tennessee 78-65 Kentucky

The two-seeded Tennessee Vols squeezed past the No. 3 seed Kentucky 78-65 in the Sweet 16. It was the first time in history that Tennessee and Kentucky have matched up in the Big Dance. Zakai Zeigler led the Vols with 18 points in his double-double, while Lanier and Gainey recorded in double figures.

Zeigler broke the single-season SEC assist record after recording his 261st assist of the season. Lamont Butler scored 18 points for the Wildcats, who matched their fewest points in a game this season. Tennessee outscored Kentucky 43-28 in the first half. Vols are now 15-0 in the NCAA Tournament when up by 10 or more at halftime.

Auburn 78-65 Michigan

A second-half outburst helped Auburn Tigers to beat the Wolverines 78-65 to set a date with Michigan State for the Elite 8 game on Sunday. Michigan had a 48-39 lead in the second half and Auburn sparked a 12-0 run to control the game. Following Rubin Jones’ layup shot, the Tigers scored eight straight points to take a nine-point lead.

Johni Broome scored 22 points and 16 rebounds while Denver Jones added 20. Tahaad Pettiford contributed 20 points off the bench on 7-for-17 shooting. Danny Wolf led the Wolverines with 20 points and they shot 21-for-59 from the floor. This is the third time Auburn reached Elite 8 in March Madness history.

Houston 62-60 Purdue

No. 1 seeded Houston Cougars advanced to Elite 8 after a thrilling two-point victory over Purdue Boilermakers. Emanuel Sharp scored 20 points and Milos Uzan added 19, including a game-winning layup. J’Wan Roberts chipped in 12 rebound for Houston, Fletcher led Purdue with 16 points and Trey Kaufman-Renn added 14. Braden Smith had 15 assists.

Milos Uzan’s three-pointer helped Houston to build a 10-point lead in the middle of the second half. However, Purdue had a 9-1 run to reduce the deficit to two points and Hide’s 3-pointer with 35 seconds left tied the game at 60 points. Uzan’s layup shot at the buzzer helped Houston snatch a victory.
