Boston Bruins Trent Frederic Sidelined Week-to-Week with Lower-Body Injury

Anamika Shrivastava

Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic faces a week-to-week absence due to a lower-body injury, impacting the team's depth.

The Boston Bruins will be without forward Trent Frederic for the foreseeable future after he suffered a lower-body injury in Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, Frederic is considered week-to-week, and while his absence could stretch past the March 7 trade deadline, it reportedly won’t impact Boston’s approach to potential deals.

Frederic went down early in the second period of the Bruins’ 5-4 overtime loss after an awkward fall while attempting to check Toronto defenseman Jake McCabe. Though he managed to skate off on his own, he headed straight to the dressing room and didn’t return to the game.

The 27-year-old has been a reliable middle-six forward for the Bruins in recent seasons, putting up 71 points over the last two years. However, this season has been a struggle. Through 57 games, he has just 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists) and a career-worst -14 rating, despite logging more ice time than ever at 13:50 per game.

Despite the dip in production, Frederic remains an intriguing trade option. He brings size and physicality at 6-foot-3 and 221 pounds, making him a valuable asset in a market thin on rental centers behind Brock Nelson. He’s also versatile, capable of playing all three forward positions. However, his faceoff numbers leave something to be desired—winning just 43.9% of his draws this season, slightly below his career average of 44.4%. His physical play has remained a factor, ranking second on the Bruins with 155 hits while also racking up 44 penalty minutes.

Several teams, including the Canucks, Capitals, and Wild, have been linked to Frederic, per David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. Given his affordable $2.3 million cap hit, Boston likely won’t need to retain salary in any potential trade.

With Frederic out, the Bruins have opted to keep top prospect Fabian Lysell in the AHL for now. Instead, Riley Tufte, a 26-year-old forward with just three points in 22 career NHL games, stepped into a top-nine role at morning skate. It’s a big challenge for Tufte, but Boston will need to rely on its depth until Frederic is ready to return.
