McCaffrey, Mason, Givens out, 49ers’ season in jeopardy
The San Francisco 49ers’ injury troubles deepened this week with the announcement that Christian McCaffrey and his backup, Jordan Mason, are headed to injured reserve. Adding to the blow, defensive tackle Kevin Givens is out for the season after tearing his pectoral muscle. Here’s a breakdown of what these losses mean for the team.
Christian McCaffrey will miss at least six weeks after suffering a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury during Sunday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. This marks his second stint on injured reserve this season, as he had already missed the first eight games due to Achilles tendinitis.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his frustration over the situation:
“I just feel for him. It was a real frustrating year for him. He worked his ass off to get back to this point and I think he was really feeling good and about to take off and just had that real unfortunate injury last night. I know he’s as crushed as anyone, but he’ll get through this. He’s a hell of a player, a hell of a person and an unbelievable 49er. He’ll be back stronger than ever next year to help us.”
The 49ers, now sitting at 5-7 and last in the NFC West, face an uphill battle to make the playoffs.
Jordan Mason, who stepped up earlier this season when McCaffrey dealt with Achilles tendinitis, is also sidelined. Mason sustained a high-ankle sprain during the same game against the Bills and is expected to miss at least four games. This further depletes the 49ers’ running back depth chart at a critical point in the season.
Kevin Givens’ season is officially over after he tore his pectoral muscle early in Sunday’s game. Givens, who had recorded 11 total tackles and 3.5 sacks this season, left the game in the first half after playing just three snaps.
Furthermore, Kalia Davis is expected to take over as the primary backup for the interior defensive line in Givens’ absence. The injury adds to a growing list of setbacks for San Francisco’s defense.
With McCaffrey and Mason both out, here’s what the San Francisco 49ers running back room looks like heading into Week 14:
Rookie Isaac Guerendo steps into the starting role. The 24-year-old has rushed for 246 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries this season. His standout performance came in Week 6, where he notched nearly 100 yards on just 10 carries. Guerendo is expected to handle 15-20 touches per game, offering a chance for him to showcase his potential over the next few weeks.
Recently re-signed to the practice squad, Patrick Taylor Jr. is likely to be elevated to the active roster. The 6-foot-2 back has appeared in eight games this season but has yet to make a significant impact. Taylor will need to make the most of his opportunities if he hopes to stick with the team long-term.
While primarily a blocker, Juszczyk may see increased involvement in short-yardage situations.
The San Francisco 49ers’ injury list continues to grow, with key players like Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel missing games in recent weeks. Additionally, off-field tragedies have taken an emotional toll on the team.
Trent Williams and his wife recently lost one of their twin babies during her pregnancy, and the other was stillborn in November. In October, Charvarius Ward revealed the heartbreaking loss of his 23-month-old daughter. Ward took weeks of bereavement leave before returning to the field.
Before the season began, rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall survived a shooting near Union Square. Despite the incident, he made his debut just 50 days later and has been working his way back into the lineup.
