Patrick Mahomes is currently the leading candidate for the regular season MVP!
With Week 9 of the NFL approaching fast, we have officially reached the halfway mark of the regular season. And that means it is now time to take a look at the top candidates who are in the race for the regular-season MVP award, handed out to the best player in the league at the end of the season.
Of course, there is every possibility that someone can have an astonishing second half of the season and walk away with the MVP once all is said and done, but here are some of the top players leading the way at this time of the season. (Sourced from FanDuel).
Patrick Mahomes is once again having the typical Patrick Mahomes type of season. The Chiefs are on a 3-game win streak and are currently 5-3. After starting the initial few games without Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, Mahomes did what he needed to, and that was leading the team in rushing yards.
Since his receivers have returned, there is a spring in his step, something that was missing in the past couple of seasons. Through 8 games, Mahomes has 2,099 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a passer rating of 103.1. He has also added 280 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground.

Josh Allen and the Bills are 5-2 through the first 8 weeks of football. After starting the season with 4 consecutive wins, the Bills dropped 2 games in a row. Quarterback Josh Allen has maintained his position as a top-two contender for the MVP.
If Allen continues to thrive, he could be in line for a second consecutive MVP campaign. Currently, through his 7 games, Allen has 1,560 yards, 12 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a passer rating of 103.6. He also has 261 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.
Drake Maye is off to a sensational start in his second year with the Patriots. New England is atop the AFC East with a 6-2 record, and Maye’s play is a major contributing factor.
From 8 games thus far, Maye has a solid pass completion of 75.2%, 2026 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 3 picks, and a high passer rating of 118.7. He has also added 250 rushing yards along with 2 rushing touchdowns.

In a category primarily dominated by quarterbacks, running back Jonathan Taylor has made his way to this list. Taylor has been sensational for the Indianapolis Colts this season and leads the league with 850 rushing yards as well as in touchdowns with 12. Taylor is one of the two players who have been playing lights out for the Colts this season, with the other one being quarterback Daniel Jones.

With a pass completion rate of 74.9%, Goff is only second to Drake Maye in that category so far. He has led the Detroit Lions to a 5-2 record and continues to be impressive for his team. In seven games, Goff has 1,631 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, and a passer rating of 116.4
Baker Mayfield has the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thriving this year. Even though he has missed Chris Godwin in the first few weeks of the season and is now without Mike Evans, Mayfield already has superb chemistry with rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka.
The Bucs are well ahead in the NFC South with a 6-2 record, with Mayfield’s ball distribution being a key component of their success. The Bucs’ quarterback has 1,919 yards worth of passing, 13 touchdowns, 2 picks, and a passer rating of 98.1.
Last but not least is the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Daniel Jones, whose career graph has suddenly shot up after switching teams in the offseason. Jones is playing football like he never has at this level, and that is part of the reason the Colts are enjoying the best record in the league at 7-1.
The 28-year-old is completing 71.2% of his passes and has 2,062 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 3 picks, and a passer rating of 109.5.

There is still a long way to go until the end of the regular season. A lot can change between now and then, but if these players continue to perform consistently, there is a great chance that one of them will be holding aloft the MVP Award at the end of the 2025-26 NFL season.

nfl I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
