Yuki Tsunoda has been handling the second Red Bull Racing car for considerable amount of time as of August 2025. After his sudden call to the senior team during the Japanese Grand Prix, Tsunoda has been working with the team in order to get better results out of their second car. Yuki Tsunoda’s performance is still not up to to the mark. The Japanese driver is hardly catching up to Max Verstappen during Grand Prix sessions.

Red Bull chose to work with him throughout the 2025 season in hopes of bringing out the best in him and the RB21. There were multiple warnings from F1 experts who believe Tsunoda doesn’t have a lot of time left. There was also a major change in Red Bull management after the British Grand Prix. While some people believe, it’s a trailer of what may befall Tsunoda. There is also hope for the Japanese driver considering his relationship with the new team principal and CEO, Laurent Mekies.

Laurent Mekies’ Arrival Brings Forth Renewed Hope for Yuki Tsunoda’s Stay at Red Bull

Laurent Mekies is the new CEO and team principal of Red Bull Racing. The team is known for its cutthroat practices and Mekies’ arrival is the prime example of the same. He was promoted to the team after Red Bull Racing promptly fired their long-time team principal and CEO, Christian Horner.

The reasons may be many but the primary reasons quoted for his exit was the lack of performance in the 2025 season. The next target for Red Bull Racing’s surprise sack is seemingly Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese has been hardly proving himself better than his predecessors. And in a lineup like Red Bull Racing, there are more than enough drivers ready to replace Yuki.

Although, Laurent Mekies’ arrival also brought forth some positive signs for Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese driver was able to claim P7 in Belgium GP qualifying. It was his best result in Red Bull and the team’s best result in qualifying in a long time.

The recent success of Yuki Tsunoda is being attributed to his previous experience with Laurent Mekies. Before joining Red Bull Racing, Tsunoda was terrific at Racing Bulls. He was bringing forth amazing results with Laurent Mekies as his mentor. Talking about his previous Grand Prix with Laurent Mekies, Tsunoda says-

“It’s a big thing for our team. I didn’t expect it. Laurent, I worked with him at the beginning of the season – the first races and last year, the whole season. He’s a very nice guy. We have a very good relationship. He always came and saw me about the feedback and how we can make the car better. It was a very enjoyable moment together.”

“That’s how we also have success or we made progress in our team . I’m looking forward to working with him again. I’m sure he’ll do good. There’s a clear DNA. That’s the reason why this team had such a successful season in previous years. I don’t think we have to change that. I’m sure from his fresh eye he can see how we can do even better as a team.”

Yuki Tsunoda’s renewed confidence and Laurent Mekies’ soft approach might just be the only thing Red Bull needed for their resurgence. After Max Verstappen, confirmation of staying with Red Bull Racing, the team has averted some of the probable disasters.
