Clash of the titans for bragging rights in Madrid !
Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will renew a rivalry for the ages when they meet in the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open final on Saturday. Both players overcame tough hurdles in the form of Elina Svitolina and defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. While the World No. 1 is gunning for glory yet again after winning at the Spanish capital in 2023, her American counterpart seeded No. 4 is vying for her maiden Madrid Open trophy. Who is going to emerge as the queen of Spain?

The Sabalenka-Gauff rivalry is one of the most closely contested duels on the WTA circuit. It dates back to 2020, when the young teenager won a three set thriller against the Belarusian. Fast forward to the 2024 WTA Finals, and the more experienced Coco Gauff was still waving her magical wand of a racquet around Sabalenka. Their head to head record currently stands at 5-4 in favour of 21-year-old Gauff, ahead of Sunday’s final.
Aryna Sabalenka is the WTA’s most in-form player by a long distance. At the age of 26, she already has three Grand Slams and 37 singles final appearances. Madrid will be her sixth final of 2025, and fourth in a row. Meanwhile Coco Gauff, who won the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh, is featuring in her first summit clash since then. It will be the 2023 US Open champ’s 11th career final on Saturday.
Eyeing a third Madrid Open crown (after 2021 and 2023), top seed Sabalenka will tie Petra Kvitova’s record for most titles at La Caja Magica if she can beat Gauff. However, it won’t be easy – the American prodigy stopped Sabalenka’s 7-match winning streak in their only previous clay court meeting at Rome in 2021. Provided Gauff repeats the excellence on Manolo Santana Stadium, she will climb to No. 2 in the WTA Rankings.
Sabalenka vs Gauff will be the curtain-closer on super Saturday at the Manolo Santana Stadium. The match will be played after the men’s doubles final which opens play on the centre court.
Date: 3 May, 2025
