Ever since its inauguration in 1997, the WNBA has crowned 29 champions through the 2025 season. In the early seasons of the league, Houston Comets dominated by winning four straight seasons from 1997 to 2000. Later, the Los Angeles Sparks took over and won two back-to-back titles. Over the years, the championship format evolved from one single game matchup to the newly adopted best-of-seven series.
In the inaugural season, a single championship game decided the champion, while the number went up to three in 1998 when two teams were added. The league adopted the best-of-five format in 2005, and it was in 2025 when the league went for a best-of-seven series in the finals. Apart from it, a homecourt system of 2-2-1-1-1, similar to the NBA Finals was also adopted in the 2025 season. In addition to it, the WNBA Finals weren’t always known with this name. Earlier, from 1997 to 2001, the finale series went by the name, WNBA Championship.
