Wimbledon 2025 – Mass Exodus in Round One as a Record Number of Seeds Crash Out

Devavrat Kulkarni

13 seeds out from the men's draw in round one!

The grass courts of Wimbledon have played spoilsport this year as several seeds have fallen by the wayside in just the first round. A stunning result of exits from the first two days of the tournament has opened the door for many unseeded players to perform well and progress to the later stages.

You never really know what to expect from the grass season, and Wimbledon in particular, as it is the shortest swing on tour, and shock results are always on the cards. All in all, a total of 23 seeded players from both the men’s and women’s draws have exited the tournament.

Alexander Zverev Among Record Number of Seeds To Fall in Round One

History was made in the opening round of Wimbledon this year as a record of 13 seeds fell on the men’s side of the draw. This is the most number of seeds to go out at the prestigious event, and it has tied the Grand Slam record with that of the 2004 Australian Open.

Leading the slide in the men’s side of the draw, third seed Alexander Zverev, crashed out after a tough five-set battle against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Despite hitting 31 aces and landing 81% of his first serves, the German struggled against his heavy-hitting opponent in a match that had only 3 breaks of serve. Rinderknech himself hit 25 aces on his serve and saved all 9 break points he faced, dispatching Zverev in 4 hours and 40 minutes.

However, many other top seeds on the men’s side struggled, including Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, and Daniil Medvedev, who from the top ten are also out. Here is a complete list of the men’s seeds that have exited in the first round.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula Stunned As the Number 2 and 3 Seeds

On the women’s side of the draw, the number 2 seed Coco Gauff became the biggest casualty of the first round as she faltered to a straight-sets defeat against Dayana Yastremska.

The Ukrainian took the game to Gauff, playing aggressively and converted on 4 of her 6 break points while allowing Gauff only one chance. The American also struggled mightily on her serve, sending down 9 double faults.

Number 3 seed Jessica Pegula also made her exit from the tournament after suffering a heavy 6-2, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Elisabetta Cocciaretto in yet another stunning upset. The Italian did not face a single break point during her serve, while she converted on 4 herself. Cocciaretto also hit 17 winners to just 5 from Pegula.

Other notable top-ten seeds to crash out include Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa. A complete list of the seeds who are out of the women’s draw is as follows.

Wimbledon will begin play for the second round today, and from what we have seen so far this year, one thing is for sure: Nobody is safe on the green grass of SW19. Are we in for more shock upsets, or will the rest of the tournament sail through as expected?

nfl nfl

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
