Wimbledon 2025 opens with surprises and early shake-ups in the men’s draw.

Wimbledon’s opening day delivered fireworks as two top-10 seeds, Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev, were sent packing in shocking first-round upsets. With both eighth-seeded Rune and ninth-seeded Medvedev expected to make deep runs, their early exits have blown the men’s draw wide open. Setting the stage for unexpected contenders to seize the lead in the rounds ahead and once again highlighting the beautifully unpredictable nature of tennis.

Rune Falls to Inspired Jarry in Five-Set Collapse

Holger Rune looked in complete control after two solid sets against Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry, but things quickly unraveled. The world No. 143 mounted an inspired comeback to win 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, sending the Dane home in dramatic fashion.

Rune, who struggled physically as the match wore on, called for a medical timeout in the fourth set to treat a knee issue and appeared to suffer under the heat. Wearing a bandage after the break, he dropped the fourth and couldn’t hang on in the fifth despite briefly finding a second wind. Jarry broke Rune at 4-4 in the final set and served out the win with confidence.

Now, Jarry advances to face American teen Learner Tien, who upset Nishesh Basavareddy in straight sets earlier.

Medvedev Shocked by Bonzi in Four Tight Sets

Daniil Medvedev’s Wimbledon woes continued as he was taken down by Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, ranked No. 64 in the world. In a tight, high-quality battle, Bonzi held his nerve through two tiebreaks to emerge victorious 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

The 2021 US Open champion and two-time Wimbledon semifinalist admitted he was stunned by the level his opponent brought to the court.

“[It’s] tough, I mean, sad. I felt like I didn’t play too bad. I don’t see much I could do better. I was surprised by his level,” Medvedev told BBC Sport. “I know that he can play well. I would be surprised if you find a match of him playing like this any other time this year. I’m surprised he did today. But it can happen. That’s when sensations happen.”

The win marks Bonzi’s first-ever victory over a top-10 opponent and ties his best Wimbledon result to date, a huge statement for the 29-year-old. Next, Bonzi will clash with Jordan Thompson, who upset Vit Kopriva in five sets, including a tiebreak in the fourth set.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
