Red Devils Sidelined as FIFA’s New Qualification Rules Favor Champions League Success

Many elite clubs from all over the world will participate in the commenced FIFA Club World Cup 2025. However, some of the best names will miss out on the competition failing to tick all the boxes of the qualification.

Manchester United will be among these names as the prestigious club is not a part of the Club World Cup. Here is an overview of what are the requirements to appear in the Club World Cup and how the Red Devils missed out on this newly introduced format of the tournament.

Why Manchester United Missed Out on the Club World Cup 2025

Manchester United’s poor form in the UEFA Champions League in a few of the previous seasons has ruled them out of the Club World Cup 2025. The first and direct criterion is that the club that has won the continental trophy (UCL in Europe) in recent seasons is qualified for the Club World Cup 2025.

Along with this, only two clubs from a country are allowed to participate in the FIFA tournament. Hence, Chelsea and Manchester City having won the UCL trophy in the last five years will represent England at the Club World Cup 2025.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Qualification Criteria

Based on performances in each confederation’s premier club competition over the four seasons from 2020/21 to 2023/24. Here’s a breakdown of the key criteria:

  • Champions League Winners
  • Four-Year Ranking System
  • Two-Club Per Country Limit
  • Host Nation Slot

The format criteria provide fair treatment on a global stage concluding in exclusive contests. With clubs arriving from all continents, fans will witness their boyhood clubs go against some of the best on the planet.

Manchester United missing out on the 2025 Club World Cup denotes the high standards set forth by FIFA. Several other clubs like FC Barcelona, Arsenal and AC Milan will also miss out due to the same reasons.

Club World Cup 2025 consists of 32 teams divided into eight groups. With three group stage games and the knockout stage to follow in July 2025, the first edition of the new format is set to bring excitement all over the globe given its versatility.
