Players’ Union Chief Blasts FIFA Over Player Welfare Concerns

FIFPRO Accuses FIFA of ‘Fiction’ and Warns of Risks to Player Health.

The president of global players’ union FIFPRO, Sergio Marchi, has launched a fierce attack on FIFA. He has accused the governing body of prioritizing revenue over the health of players. This came after the conclusion of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

In a strongly-worded statement, Marchi labeled the tournament as “nothing more than a fiction.” He also compared FIFA president Gianni Infantino to the Roman emperor Nero. He accused FIFA of “grandiloquent staging inevitably reminiscent of the ‘bread and circuses’ of Nero’s Rome.”

He criticized the lack of protection for players amid a congested football calendar. Marchi iterated, “What was presented as a global celebration of football was nothing more than a fiction created by FIFA, promoted by its president, without dialogue, sensitivity, and respect for those who sustain the game with their daily efforts.”

FIFPRO Excluded From Key Talks

Tensions intensified after it emerged that FIFPRO was not invited to a summit in New York on the eve of the Club World Cup final between Chelsea and PSG. FIFA had announced that a “consensus” was reached during the meeting regarding player rest.

They said that they came to an agreement for at least 72 hours between matches and a minimum 21-day rest period at the end of each season. However, Marchi rejected this. He claimed that the players continue to face “unacceptable conditions.”

He also highlighted the union’s demand for a four-week rest, which FIFA ignored. As per reports, other player representatives present at the meeting were not officially affiliated with FIFPRO. This certainly raises questions about the legitimacy of the consensus.

Legal Battle Looms Over Fixture Congestion

FIFPRO, along with several European leagues, have filed a legal complaint with the European Union. They’ve accused FIFA of abusing its dominant position in global football and unilaterally expanding the match calendar. The union argued on the effect on players’ health due to the congested act.

They argued that the packed schedule leaves players with insufficient physical and mental recovery time. Marchi warned, “We cannot continue to play with the health of players to fuel a marketing machine. This situation must not be repeated under any circumstances at next year’s FIFA World Cup.”
