It was in 1997 when basketball fans got a women’s counterpart of the NBA, the WNBA. What once started as an eight-team competition, the WNBA has touched significant heights in recent years. During its inception years, the league had to face several challenges including those related to media coverage and fan engagement. 

However, as years passed, the league built a strong foundation and successfully broadened its horizons. In recent years, the league has successfully captivated the attention of the audience, making it more popular than ever. 

It has allowed several players to showcase their talents to the world. Names like Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, A’ja Wilson, Candace Parker, and so much more, have raised the popularity of women’s basketball. 

Recently, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark made such a huge impact in the WNBA. Her popularity helped WNBA set new viewership records. The previous season went on to become the most-watched WNBA Regular Season across all platforms in 24 years, per ESPN. 

Needless to say, as the clock is ticking and we are moving towards a brand-new WNBA season, hopes are high from all teams. While the reigning champions, New York Liberty will aim to defend their title, other teams will eye stepping up their game.

WNBA season start date – What month does the 2025 WNBA season start?

Action for the brand new edition will get underway for the 2025 regular season on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Considering the success of the league in recent years, the forthcoming season is expected to be a promising season. In December 2024, the league announced the commencing date for its 29th season.  

After action-filled 44 games per team, the regular season will come to an end on September 11. The Playoffs will begin on September 14, while the last possible date for the finals is expected to be October 17.

How long is the 2025 WNBA season?

The 29th WNBA regular season will begin on May 16, and come to a conclusion on September 11. A total of 44 games are scheduled, with 22 home games and 22 road games for each team. At the opening, all 13 teams will be in action during the opening weekend as a part of the WNBA Tip-Off 2025. In the month of June, the Commissioner’s Cup, a 36-team tournament will be played from 1 to 17 June. It will be followed by the WNBA All-Star Break from July 17 to July 21. 

Three days after the conclusion of the Regular Season, the Playoffs will commence on September 14. The last possible date for the finale of the season is October 17. 

Hence, fans will witness almost five months filled with action in women’s basketball. 

What is the new WNBA team in 2025?

This year, a total of 13 teams will participate in the WNBA. The newest team of the league is Golden State Valkyries, which was announced in 2023 with an expansion draft held in December 2024. The team is owned by Joe Lacob, Peter Guber and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Notably, the NBA side paid a sum of $50 million as the expansion fee. 

Is Caitlin Clark going to play in the WNBA in 2025?

Caitlin Clark is set to play the 2025 season with the Indiana Fever. However, before the beginning of the regular season, she will be in action for a preseason game at the University of Iowa against the Brazilian National team. 

Caitlin Clark was selected as the first overall pick of the WNBA 2024 draft by the Indiana Fever. The Iowa star, who is the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer, created havoc in her debut season. Finishing with an average of 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists, Clark was adjudged the Rookie of the Year. 

Not only this, but Clark had her first WNBA All-Star selection in her debut season and she was named Athlete of the Year by Time magazine. 

She will aim for a better season with the Fever, who finished the previous season in sixth spot with 20 wins and 20 losses.
