What happened to Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon? Why did he retire from his match against Jannik Sinner?

During the third set, the scoreline was 2-2 when Dimitrov decided to leave the game.

World No. 1 Jannic Sinner was playing against Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16 and the upset was on the cards as the Bulgarian ace won the first two sets. He just needed a set to defeat the Italian ace but a cruel twist in the game ended his hopes to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in a decade.

2014 was the last instance when Dimitrov reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The 19th seed was in the mood to topple the world No. 1 at Centre Court and he initially took a 2-0 lead in the match. During the third set, the scoreline was 2-2 when Dimitrov decided to leave the game.

What happened to Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon? Why did Sinner Get Walkover Win?

Heading to the third set, Dimitrov had a 6-3, 7-5 lead in the match. The Bulgarian ace faced a sudden injury which left him in pain. The score was tied at 2-2 when Dimitrov felt uncomfortable and showed signs of discomfort in his pectoral muscle. Despite this, he attempted an ace and later, collapsed to the ground, clutching his chest and shouting, “My pec! My pec!”

BBC commentator Andrew Cotter said: “He’s feeling that chest and Sinner comes quickly across. This is not good at all for Grigor Dimitrov. And this would be desperately, desperately sad if this is the end, and it looks very, very serious, as if it’s a proper strain. We saw it a couple of points before, we saw his body language.”

Jannik Sinner walked across the court to check on him and medical staff joined Dimitrov. The 15th seed walked off the court for a medical assistance and returned after two minutes. Dimitrov was emotional as decided to leave the game. Sinner offered his left arm to support his right so Dimitrov could shake his hand with chair umpire. The crowd cheered for Dimitrov for his commitment.

The injury was serious that Dimitrov didn’t take part in the media conference. Wimbledon issued a statement reading: “Following on-court treatment and after further medical advice, Grigor Dimitrov will not be undertaking any media commitments tonight.”

“Get well soon, my friend. Wishing you all the best,” Jannik Sinner shared a heartfelt message for Dimitrov on his social media account. “I don’t take this as a win at all,” Sinner said during the post-game. The Italian ace will take on no. 10 seed Ben Shelton in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
