Can the new ‘Big-2’ rival the dominance of the iconic ‘Big-3’?
World No. 6 Taylor Fritz had to endure the wrath of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic for a large chunk of his career. Just as the domination of the ‘Big-3’ began fading away, the emergence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has given the men’s tour a new look. According to the American powerhouse, their domination has ensured a new ‘Big-2’ on the ATP Tour.
In 2024, Fritz was denied a maiden Grand Slam title by Sinner at the US Open. He followed it up with an immaculate run to the final at the Nitto ATP Finals, where he was defeated by the Italian yet again. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old saw his career-best semifinal outing at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships cut short by the Spanish sensation Alcaraz. After being knocked out in the round robin stage of the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals, Fritz delved into the new era of men’s tennis.
The 6th seed in Turin opened his account with a statement victory over home favorite Lorenzo Musetti. Looking to seal his spot in the semifinals, Fritz tasted a stinging 7-6(2) 5-7 3-6 defeat at the hands of Alcaraz. As a result, he needed a win over Alex de Minaur in the final fixture to qualify. On Thursday, Fritz was left stranded by an inspired performance from the Australian, resulting in his elimination from the tournament.

With two grass court titles to his name, Fritz will be rather happy with his 2025 campaign. After shifting gears at the Miami Open where he reached the semifinals, the American peaked on the greens by capturing trophies at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart and Eastbourne Open. He then reached his first Wimbledon semifinal, before adding another tour-level final and semifinal to his arsenal of impressive outings. Moreover, his role in leading Team World to the Laver Cup can be described as nothing short of heroic.
Having finished the year with 53 wins and 23 losses, Fritz was asked about the prolific performances of Alcaraz and Sinner. Earlier in 2024, he had stated that draws are more open in the current era as opposed to when the Big-3 were around. “We’re in the Big-2 [era] now,” Fritz responded. “I think the difference is back when we had the big three, I mean, I’m a lot better of a player now.
Taylor Fritz has named who he'd have on his Mount Rushmore for tennis 🎾

“I think obviously if I play well, I can play a close match with Carlos like we saw. Yeah, I need to continue to improve and that’s just what my focus is. Obviously those two are ahead of everyone. The draws are open when, like in Shanghai, Carlos doesn’t play and Jannik happens to lose. But no, I wouldn’t say things are super open. If you want to win a big title, more than likely you’re going to have to beat one of them, if not both of them.”
Can Taylor Fritz even the odds and match the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in 2026?
