A big big blow!
In a shocking turn of events, San Antonio Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team announced on Friday.

The loss of their superstar comes at a critical moment, as Wembanyama has been in sensational form during his sophomore year, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks in 46 games. With the Spurs currently sitting 12th in the Western Conference with a 23-29 record, his absence will make a massive impact for team’s race for the playoffs.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the legs, but can occur in other parts of the body as well. For athletes, DVT is particularly concerning because the clot can restrict blood flow, potentially leading to serious complications like pulmonary embolism, where the clot travels to the lungs, which can be life-threatening.
While the medical condition has, in some cases, forced athletes into retirement, there have been instances in recent NBA history of players experiencing similar isolated incidents who have successfully made a return to the court.
The San Antonio Spurs will have a tough time defending the paint with Victor Wembanyama out for the rest of the season. Backup center Charles Bassey is also injured with an MCL sprain, leaving the Spurs with fewer options. Power forwards Jeremy Sochan and Sandro Mamukelashvili will have to play most of their minutes at center.
