Vancouver Canucks Elias Pettersson, Nils Hoglander Sidelined for at Least Four Games

Anamika Shrivastava

The Vancouver Canucks are facing a tough stretch as they’ll be without two key forwards, Elias Pettersson and Nils Hoglander, for at least the next four games of their road trip. Both players suffered undisclosed injuries during Saturday night’s game and were absent from practice on Sunday. While neither injury appeared obvious then, Pettersson left the ice late in the second period after a series of unusually short shifts, and Hoglander followed soon after following a brief stick battle. Their absence leaves a major gap in Vancouver’s top-six forward group at a critical point in the season.

This road trip, their second six-game stretch away from home this season, began on a promising note with a win against St. Louis. Pettersson was instrumental in that victory, leading all Canucks forwards in ice time and notching two assists. Hoglander also contributed with an assist, making their injuries even more frustrating as the team fights for a playoff spot. With both out of the lineup, the Canucks must now reshuffle their offense and rely on young talent to step up.

Aatu Raty is expected to be one of the immediate replacements. The 21-year-old rookie has spent most of the season in the AHL but has been highly productive with 39 points in 41 games for the Abbotsford Canucks. However, his NHL experience has been limited, with just four points in 21 appearances. Raty hasn’t played in a regular role since December, aside from a one-off appearance in late January, but now he’ll have a golden opportunity to earn meaningful minutes. He was recalled ahead of Saturday’s game and should get an extended look while Vancouver is on the road.

Another young forward, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, may also see an increased role. The Canucks’ highly regarded prospect has split time between the NHL and AHL this season, picking up four points in 18 games at the top level. In the AHL, he’s been much more effective, scoring 19 goals and 28 points in 32 games. With Hoglander out, Lekkerimaki could earn a bigger role, possibly on the third line, and may also see some time on the power play.

Vancouver is in a tight battle for a Western Conference Wild Card spot, sitting five points back with two games in hand. However, their recent 5-4-1 record hasn’t been strong enough to close the gap on teams like St. Louis and Calgary, who have been in better form. Losing Pettersson, who leads all Canucks forwards with 45 points in 64 games, is a major blow. Hoglander’s 21 points and gritty style will also be tough to replace. The upcoming games will be a crucial test for Vancouver’s depth, and the young players stepping in will need to prove they can help keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.
