Frances Tiafoe exits the 2025 US Open.
The 2025 US Open continues to show its true colors. After multiple upsets in round 2, the third round has also given fans some big surprises. For instance, the American star Frances Tiafoe has fallen to an unseeded player. But, he isn’t alone, as both Emma Navarro and Jasmine Paolini have become a part of this upset group. The bigger story, however, is the shocking way these three stars lost against their opponents.
Ben Shelton’s unfortunate injury and retirement from the third round had put added pressure on Frances Tiafoe. Along with Taylor Fritz, it was up to him to lead America to at least the semi-finals of the event. However, Tiafoe was caught completely off guard by the unseeded Jan-Lennard Struff. Fritz was left trailing from the beginning of the match that he ultimately lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7). The reason? Stuff’s smart strategy.

Struff knew that Tiafoe’s greatest strengths came from his rallies. As a result, the German continuously kept points short and didn’t allow Tiafoe to get much hold on the rallies. That left Tiafoe flustered and gave Struff two straight set wins. However, Tiafoe made a strong comeback in the third set and took the set to a tiebreaker, but he couldn’t get the job done. “I knew that if Frances won the third set, he could turn it around,” said Struff after the match. With Tiafoe’s exit, all American hopes now rest on Taylor Fritz, but will he recreate his 2024 performance?
To call Emma Navarro’s third-round match against Barbora Krejcikova strange wouldn’t be wrong. Navarro stormed out of the gate with a 5-1 lead. All looked good for her, and it seemed this would be an easy win for American. But then, suddenly, Krejcikova sprung up a surprise and broke two of Navarro’s services. The score was now 5-4. Somehow, Navarro was able to win that set 6-4, but clearly, she didn’t have any momentum.

The script flipped in the second set, where Krejcikova led 4-0 and eventually 5-2. That’s when Navarro broke the Czech player’s serve and took the set to 5-4. This time, Krejcikova managed to hang on. But this time the momentum was back with Navarro, and it showed in the third set when she won 3 straight games. But once again, Krejcikova fought back and won 5 straight games. In the end, the unseeded Krejcikova advanced to the 4th round with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 score. Quite a bizarre match.
Heading into the US Open, Jasmine Paolini was playing some of her best tennis. She was hoping to follow up her Cincinnati Open runner-up run and Italian Open win by going deep in the US Open. The start of her campaign was electric with two straight set wins before her match against Marketa Vondrousova. However, this match proved to be too much for Paolini.
The Italian couldn’t break Vondrousova’s serve even once and ended up losing 7-6 (4), 6-1. While for Paolini this was a disappointing day, for Vondrosouva it ended an unwanted streak. The Czech player hadn’t made it to the 4th round of a Grand Slam since 2024’s French Open. “It was a very important game,” Vondrousova said in her post-match interview. “Big difference between 4-2 and 5-1. It was a crazy game — and the key to the match.”
So as it stands, the US Open is really going on in full swing now. And once again, it has shown that no Grand Slam surprises as much as this one.
