French star sidelined after Basel setback ends home Paris Masters 2025 hopes
French No. 1 Ugo Humbert has withdrawn from this week’s Paris Masters after suffering a back injury during his semifinal clash at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The setback occurred late in the second set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, forcing the 27-year-old to retire mid-match. This also ended his hopes of defending his career-best run at his home Masters 1000 event. His coach, Jeremy Chardy, had already cast doubt on Humbert’s participation following the incident, and confirmation came on Monday morning when the Frenchman officially pulled out.

The withdrawal marks a disappointing end to what had been a resurgent indoor season for Humbert, who had reached consecutive deep runs in Stockholm and Basel. His campaign on hard courts had seen him regain form after a rather modest Asian swing, highlighted by victories over Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, Taylor Fritz, and Reilly Opelka. However, the back injury in Switzerland halted his momentum just as he was rediscovering his best rhythm on home soil.
An unfortunate ending 🤕

Humbert’s absence is particularly painful considering his heroics at last year’s Paris Masters, where he stunned Carlos Alcaraz on his way to his first Masters 1000 final. But was ousted by Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He was defending 650 ranking points from that memorable run, and his withdrawal has already seen him slide 14 places to world No. 36. The drop ends his year outside the top 30, for the first time after 2023. This could also leave him unseeded at the upcoming 2026 Australian Open, potentially exposing him to a tougher first-round draw.
Ouch. 2024 runner up Ugo Humbert, one of the local favorites, will not play in Paris this year.

Will drop 600 points and leave the top 30.
Unlikely to be seeded at the AusOpen as well.

The timing of the injury compounds a larger trend across the ATP Tour, with several players, including Jack Draper and Holger Rune, ending their seasons prematurely due to physical issues. While Humbert’s condition is not believed to be as severe, it arrives at a critical stage, cutting short what could have been a strong finish to 2025.
Known for his exceptional indoor record, with seven career titles and four on hard courts, Humbert was eyeing another deep home run to cap the season. Instead, France’s top-ranked player will have to regroup and recover before returning in 2026.
