UEFA Nations League 2024-25 Finals – List of Nations League Winners Over the Years

Tracing the Journey of the UEFA Nations League Winners in Its Previous Editions.

Since its inception in 2018, the UEFA Nations League has provided a competitive platform for European national teams. The tournament replaced the number of friendlies with high-stakes matches. In its short span, Nations League has seen thrilling encounters, dramatic comebacks, and the rise of new footballing heroes.

Over the years, three nations have etched their names onto the trophy: Portugal, France, and Spain. Each win has depicted a unique story of its own with new winners each time. However, this year, all three of the previous winners are in the semi-final along with Germany who have the chance to win their first title.

2022-23 Nations League Winners: Spain

Spain secured their first UEFA Nations League title in 2023, overcoming Croatia in a tense final held at De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam. After a goalless draw in regular and extra time, the match proceeded to penalties. Spain won 5-4 in the shootout. Goalkeeper Unai Simon became the hero after making crucial saves, while Dani Carvajal netted the decisive spot-kick.

Under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain showcased resilience throughout the tournament. A late goal by Alvaro Morata against Portugal ensured their place in the finals. Meanwhile, Joselu’s 88th-minute strike secured them their semi-final win over Italy. Midfielder Rodri’s consistent performances earned him the Player of the Finals accolade.

2020-21 Nations League Winners: France

France claimed the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League title by defeating Spain 2–1 in the final at San Siro in Milan. Despite trailing by a goal, courtesy of Mikel Oyarzabal, France responded swiftly. They were pushed ahead by a stunning equalizer from Karim Benzema and then a late winner by Kylian Mbappe.

Les Bleus displayed remarkable character throughout the tournament. In the semi-finals, they overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Belgium 3-2. Kylian Mbappe emerged as the top scorer in the entire tournament. Meanwhile, Spain’s Sergio Busquets was named Player of the Finals.

2018-19 Nations League Winners: Portugal

Portugal made history by winning the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019. Hosting the finals, they edged out the Netherlands 1-0 in the final at Estadio do Dragao in Porto. Goncalo Guedes scored the decisive goal which secured the win for Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

The Portuguese team, led by coach Fernando Santos, showcased a blend of experience and youth. Ronaldo’s hat-trick in the semi-final against Switzerland was instrumental in their journey to the final. Added to that, Bernardo Silva’s outstanding performances earned him the Player of the Finals award.
