Colorado’s Travis Hunter will attend the NFL Scouting Combine as a Cornerback

Travis Hunter played as a cornerback and a wide receiver for the Colorado Buffaloes. He was a consensus 5-star recruit and is one of the best NFL prospects we’ve seen. Hunter had initially committed to play college football for Florida State but decided to switch and play for the Jackson State instead. It was primarily because Jackson wanted to shine light on HBCU (historically black college and universities ) and also because Deion Sanders was the head coach for Jackson State University at the time. Hunter said “Coach Prime (Deion Sanders) changed my mind.” Hunter continued “He let me know how big of an impact I can have on people, that is one of the things I wanted… To shine the light on our people (African Americans) and shine the light on HBCUs.”

Hunter has followed Coach Prime where ever he goes. In 2023, Hunter transferred from Jackson State to University of Colorado to play with alongside Shedeur Sanders and Coach Prime. In 2023, Hunter posted 721 receiving yards, 57 receptions, and 5 touchdowns. Since he’s a two-way player, Hunter also played in the defensive side of the field and had 30 combined tackles, 3 interceptions, and 2 tackle for loss. He was selected to the All-American team for his performance. In 2024, Hunter exploded for 96 receptions, 1258 receiving yards, 15 receiving touchdowns. His performance both on offense and on defense won him the Heisman trophy in 2024. He is projected to be drafted anywhere between 1-5 in the 2025 NFL draft and is one of the better players amongst his peers.

Sources expect Hunter to do be either a part of WR drills or CB drills

Travis Hunter will attend the NFL Scouting Combine. Since Hunter is a two-way player, there are various questions lingering about the position he may settle for. He is officially listed as a CB but will do wide receiver drills if necessary according to NFL Inside Jonathan Jones.

Wouldn’t read much into Travis Hunter being listed at CB for combine. As @ryanwilsonCBS said, he has to be listed as something. Plus, drill work is on different days for CBs and WRs. Sources expect Hunter to do WR drills at his pro day, if necessary.

There is still a lot of questions about what position he particularly wants to play in the NFL moving forward. Perhaps, him listing himself as CB means Hunter’s more interested in the defensive side of the field. However, he has also shown that he can play as a receiver if needed.

Hunter is a rare talent in the 2025 draft class as very few players ever can play both offense and defense at an elite level. According to the latest NFL Mock draft, Tennessee Titans have the best odds to land Travis Hunter.
