Stephen A. Smith backtracks on Mahomes vs Brady GOAT debate again

Stephen A. Smith is arguably the biggest and most known sports media personality in the world. He has had some very good takes in the past and sometimes they are, in his words, “Blasphemous.” He covers various sports across the United States like the NBA, WNBA, NFL, UFC, Pro Boxing, to name a few. His knowledge about the sports and various leagues are extremely impressive. Smith works for ESPN and has his own show named First Take. Him and his crew debate about various topics and it quite fun to see. However, when you are a big personality on T.V, all eyes are on you. This also means that if you change your takes continuously, fans are going to catch that.

The Kansas City Chiefs were utterly dismantled by the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Mahomes and the rest of the team looked completely different than what we were used to. He was sacked 6 times, had two interceptions, a fumble, and a pick-six. It was one of the worst performances by a superstar quarterback in the history of football. Their offensive line was non existing, their route runners were dropping catches, their defense was only ready for Saquon Barkley and not the rest. The final score does not tell the full story as the Chiefs were down by 24 points in the half and were held to 0 points until late, in the 3rd quarter. It was a beatdown and the Eagles also ended their three-peat dreams.

Speaking about three-peat, Smith had previously claimed that if the Chiefs beat the Eagles, Mahomes would be the NFL GOAT. He was confident about the Chiefs’ chances till the very end and who would blame him? The Chiefs had won the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons and picking them only made sense. However, Smith had a different opinion about Mahomes four years ago. What was that? Let’s find out.

Three years ago Stephen A. Smith claimed that Mahomes would never be the GOAT

In 2020-21 season, the NFL’s undisputed GOAT, was still playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they beat Mahomes and the Chiefs quite badly. The final score was 31-9 and the Buccaneers shut down the Chiefs like no other. Back then, it was clear that Mahomes was not on Brady’s level yet. Even after being 43 years old, Brady crushed Mahomes and the Chiefs. This led Stephen A. to say “The issue is the GOAT. All of that stuff is over because here’s the deal.” Smith continued “It’s not just about 7 Super Bowl championships (referring to Brady’s 7 Super Bowls wins). Forget all that. Here’s what it’s about… No matter what you (Mahomes) do in your career, you lost to the man considered the GOAT, who beat you, at age 43. We will consistently remember that encounter!”

What did Smith say about Mahomes prior Super Bowl LIX?

Smith, 2 months ago, was asked if Mahomes would be considered the NFL GOAT if he three-peated in Super Bowl LIX. Stephen A. replied “If Patrick Mahomes three-peats, that solidifies it.”

Smith has changed his answer more than a few times when it came to discussing the NFL GOAT. While there’s no problem doing that, four years ago, he mentioned how Mahomes could never surpass Brady as the GOAT “no matter what,” he did in his career. His sentences does not exactly align with what he said four years ago, and what he said two months prior. So this begs the question, is Stephen A. Smith a hypocrite?
