The Champion With A Cause – Alex Pereira Turns His Success Into Service For Sao Paulo’s Children!

Zaid Quraishi

Champions are measured not just by titles won but by lives changed outside the octagon. Alex Pereira has knocked out some of the most dangerous fighters on the planet. The Brazilian striker held titles in two different UFC weight classes and remains one of the most feared competitors in MMA.

But his greatest achievement might not involve punches or kicks at all. What happens when a world champion remembers where he came from and decides to lift others up? Alex Pereira has turned his success into service for Sao Paulo’s children through his Instituto Alex Poatan foundation.

Alex Pereira Creates Opportunities For Kids

The program provides free martial arts, English, and computer classes to over 700 kids from underprivileged backgrounds in Brazil through his Instituto Alex Poatan foundation. Pereira didn’t just slap his name on a charity for tax benefits or public relations. He built something real that directly impacts children who face the same struggles he once knew. The institute focuses on kids who come from poverty and deal with challenges like drugs and alcohol in their communities. Pereira (13-3) understands those demons intimately because he battled alcoholism himself before turning his life around through martial arts.

The three-pronged approach of martial arts, English, and computers creates multiple pathways for success. Not every kid will become a professional fighter, and Pereira knows that. But every child can benefit from the discipline martial arts teaches. They learn respect, selfcontrol, and how to handle adversity; skills that transfer to every aspect of life. The English classes give kids a chance to communicate globally and access better job opportunities. Brazil’s economy offers limited options for people from poor neighborhoods, but speaking English dramatically expands possibilities.

Computer skills complete the package by preparing students for the digital economy. Whether they end up in tech, business, or any other field, computer literacy has become non-negotiable in the modern world. Pereira’s institute doesn’t just keep kids off dangerous streets for a few hours. It actively equips them with tools to build different lives. The fact that a UFC champion takes time from training camps and promotional obligations to focus on this work says everything about his character. Pereira could easily coast on his fighting success and fame, but instead he’s invested in creating lasting change in Sao Paulo!

From Tire Shop Worker To Life Changing Mentor

Alex Pereira’s backstory makes his charitable work even more meaningful. He worked in a tire shop as a young man, struggling to make ends meet while dealing with alcohol addiction. Fighting gave him purpose, discipline, and a way out of that dark place. He became a dominant kickboxing champion before transitioning to MMA and eventually joining the UFC. Pereira won the middleweight title first, then moved up to light heavyweight and captured that belt too. His success came from hard work, sacrifice, and refusing to quit when things got difficult.

Now Pereira uses his platform to give kids the same opportunities martial arts gave him. The Instituto Alex Poatan offers training in combat sports like kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu, teaching discipline and focus alongside fighting techniques. During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Pereira revealed the institute had over 700 registered kids and expressed genuine happiness about helping them. He doesn’t wany anyone to endure what he had to endure growing up.
