The American earned a routine 6-3 6-4 win to boost his quest for the title.
No. 6 seed Taylor Fritz got his Nitto ATP Finals 2025 campaign off to a flyer, earning a straight sets win over late entrant Lorenzo Musetti on Monday. The American powerhouse needed 1 hour 42 minutes to produce a 6-3 6-4 victory to top the Jimmy Connors Group. With Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur awaiting in the remaining fixtures, the opening success could be pivotal for Fritz’s title charge.
Musetti was making his debut in Turin, but failed to take control of his home advantage. Despite producing moments of brilliance, the power and accuracy of Fritz was too hot to handle. Considering the surface and conditions, it was always going to be the 28-year-old’s match to lose. He dominated the baseline from start to finish in order to silence the Italian faithful.

Having reached the semifinals and final at this event over the past two years, the World No. 6 has some amount of performance pressure on his shoulders. In 2025, he won two grass court titles, and also reached the final in Tokyo. Apart from his 52-21 record before the season-ending championships, Fritz also led Team World to ultimate glory at the Laver Cup.
It was a masterclass in taking the ball on the rise from the American. He did not give Musetti any time on the ball whatsoever, and fearlessly changed direction to go up 6-3 in the first set. Having won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and also captured the runner-up trophy at the Monte Carlo Masters 2025, there is no hiding the fact that the Italian likes variety and extended rallies. However, Fritz gave him none of it.

In the second set, Musetti dug his own grave by serving two double faults en route to getting broken at 1-1. Although the current campaign hasn’t yielded any trophies (yet), the 23-year-old reached three finals – in Monte Carlo, Chengdu and Athens. But when Fritz produced a performance rating of 9.20 on Monday, there was not much that the 9th seed could do in order to avoid defeat.
“I’m really happy, I thought I did a lot of things really well,” an elated Fritz divulged after the win. Down 0-30 while serving for the match, the former US Open finalist took the attack to his opponent. “The whole second set I played well, and had a lot of chances to break that I didn’t get. I am really happy I was able to serve it out there and it didn’t come back to ruin it.”
Fritz’s next challenge is the big fish – Carlos Alcaraz. On the other hand, Musetti will face Alex de Minaur on Wednesday.
