Shedeur Sanders Joins Joe Burrow As the Only Other Quarterback in Super Bowl Era to Accomplish Rare Feat

Devavrat Kulkarni

Shedeur Sanders brilliant performances was still not enough to win against the Titans!

When Shedeur Sanders took his first career snaps in the NFL against the Baltimore Ravens less than a month ago, he looked flustered and put up a dismal performance. In the aftermath of the game, the immediate reaction was that he looked like the 5th-round quarterback where he was selected, and that he did not have it in him to be a starter in this league.

Fast forward to his fourth game and just his third start to show the NFL community that there is more to him than what we saw in Week 11. Despite Cleveland’s loss to Tennessee on Sunday, the Browns’ backup quarterback balled out and joined Joe Burrow in a historic feat that hasn’t been achieved by any other signal caller in the Super Bowl era.

Shedeur Sanders Unique Rookie Achievement

During the game against the Tennessee Titans, Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders became the first player in franchise history to throw for over 300 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and 1 rushing touchdown.

In doing so, Sanders joined former number one overall draft pick and Bengals starting quarterback Joe Burrow to become only the second rookie quarterback to achieve the unique milestone of 350-plus passing yards, 3+ passing touchdowns, as well as a rushing touchdown in a single game.

While it is important to acknowledge that the Titans have one of the worst defenses in the league, a rookie quarterback having such a phenomenal performance in just his fourth overall game is not the easiest task. It will be interesting to see how much confidence Sanders takes from his Week 14 clash against Tennessee and how he builds on it.

Also, the bigger question that needs to be addressed in the offseason is whether or not Sanders will become the starter for the upcoming season, or will he continue to sit on the bench as the backup or even the third-string QB? That is a question only Kevin Stefanski and the Browns can answer, and one wouldn’t bet against Sanders warming the bench again, especially given the weird decision Stefanski took with the game on the line.

Stefanski Benches Sanders for Game-Tying 2-Point Attempt

The Browns made several costly errors on the field in their game against the Titans. In spite of having a top defense, these mistakes allowed Tennessee to score 31 points on Cleveland, and even though the Browns fell behind 31-17 with just over 6 minutes left in the game, Sanders led the Browns to two scores, bringing them within 2 points of tying the game.

Ironically, though, instead of trusting his rookie quarterback, who had thrown for 364 yards and a total of 4 touchdowns, Stefanski decided to bench him in favor of running the Wildcat play that confused the Browns offense as much as it did the Titans’ defense. Eventually, Sanders was left wondering what could have been as the Browns lost 31-29.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
